CU Basketball Looks For Bay Area Sweep
March 01, 2013 | Men's Basketball
Saturday, March 2, 3:05 p.m. (MST)
Arena: Haas Pavilion (11,877)
Television: ESPNU Announcers: Dave Flemming, Sean Farnham
KKZN AM 760: Mark Johnson, Chad Brown
Satellite Radio: Sirius: 139; XM: 195 (Cal Broadcast)
CU vs. California: Buffaloes lead the series 11-10 (at Boulder, 8-1; at Cal, 1-8; Neutral 2-1). CU last won in Berkeley, 63-60 on Dec. 7, 2004. CU has won three straight in the series, and six of the last seven games. Cal defeated the Buffs last year at Haas Pavilion, 57-50. Coach Boyle Teams vs. Cal: 4-1.
STARTERS: CU will be attempting to win its 20th game of the season, the seventh time in CU history to win that many in a single-season (Coach Boyle would own three of them) -Â Boyle is tied with Bill Blair (67) & Joe Harrington (67) for fifth place on the school's all-time victories list -Â Right now the 19-win season is the 11th time in 112 years of CU hoops.
A WIN AT CAL: A school-first, three-straight 20-win seasons and a season-sweep of California -Â Four straight conference road games for the first time since 1996-97 (at Missouri, Texas Tech, Baylor and Kansas State). CU won four straight twice in the Big 7/Big 8 (1961-62, the last time it won as many as five in a row, and in 1963-64) -Â Three-straight wins, six of their last seven are wins, nine of their last 11.
CARDIAC BUFFS: Under Tad Boyle (101 games), the Buffs have had more than their fair share of close games: try one-fifth of them. In games decided by three points or less in the Boyle Era, Colorado is 13-7 (4-3 in one-point games, 7-1 in two-point games and 2-3 in three-point games ... and 10-4 against league opponents, 6-3 vs. Pac-12, 4-1 vs. Big 12). And there were three overtime games that were decided by four or more points, so that means 23 games ended after regulation with the margin between 0 and 3 points.
RECORD BOOK WATCH: Andre Roberson is just the second CU men's player to eclipse the 1,000 rebound plateau (Stephane Pelle {pay-lay}: 1054, 1999-2003) - With 1,014 Roberson needs 41 rebounds to break the record. With 316 rebounds, Roberson is the 9th CU player to have that many in a season. Last year he grabbed a CU-best 401 rebounds - 11 double-doubles this season (36 career, tied for 4th at CU).
CU RIGHT NOW BEFORE CAL GAME: Eight wins in CU's last 10 games matching the 2010-11 season (Feb. 23-Mar. 22) this late in a season -Â A season sweep of Stanford for the first time in the series since CU won in 1957 and 1990, ironically played on the same day Dec. 23, 33 years apart -Â 5th road win, the most since 2003-04 when CU won 6 -Â 4th conference road win, the most since 1996-97 (4) -Â 5 of 6 regular season conference wins this late in the season matching last six games of the 2003-04 campaign -Â CU had only five assists, the lowest of the season, and lowest in a game where Buffs won since Jan. 21, 1981 at Nebraska, 62-59
LAST TIME vs. CALIFORNIA (W, 81-71, Jan. 27): Askia Booker (20 pts.), Xavier Johnson (18 pts., 12 rbs.), Spencer Dinwiddie (16), Andre Roberson (15) led the way. Said Boyle: "The game was one of those deals where our shooting (59.6 percent) overcame a lot of other ills and some deficiencies we know we have to get better at." Topping his list were the 20 CU turnovers that led to 22 Cal points. There also were the Bears' 53 second-half points - 33 of them attributable to guards Allen Crabbe and Justin Cobbs, who finally got untracked after nearly silent first halves and helped whittle an 18-point Buffs lead to eight in the final minute. But in the final 60 seconds, Dinwiddie hit eight consecutive free throws to keep the Buffs afloat. For the afternoon, he hit 9-of-10. Roberson played only 2 first-half minutes due to foul problems and was limited to five rebounds.
REBOUNDS/BLOCKS/STEALS: Andre Roberson has had at least 10 rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 10 games this year, twice as many as any other Division I player.

THE "GRIND": Since college basketball expanded schedules to encompass 27 or more games, game numbers 18 through 27 haven't always been that kind to Colorado. But in this 10-game span for the 2012-13 season, the Buffaloes are 8-2, the best record in school history for the games 18-to-27 stretch (CU was 7-3 on just two other occasions, 2003-04 and 2011-12). Often concerned the part of the schedule that can be a grind, especially if you're playing multiple freshmen as CU has been, Boyle's Buffaloes are 18-12 in this particular stretch (and won game 28 each of the last two seasons). The 19-8 overall mark is tied for the third best record by any CU team that has played at least 27 games:
20-7: 1968-69, 1996-97
19-8: 2005-06, 2012-13
18-9: 2003-04, 2011-12
SOPHOMORE DUOS: Spencer Dinwiddie (15.4 ppg.) and Askia Booker (13.0 ppg.) are the first sophomore tandem in 45 years (1968-69) to lead the team in 1-2 scoring. They join Cliff Meely (23.8, 667 pts.) and Ron Smith (12.6, 214 pts.) as sophomore standouts, who both led CU to the Big 8 title, finished in third place at the NCAA Midwest Tournament, and a 21-7 record (first 20-win season in school history). As freshmen, Dinwiddie (360 pts.) and Booker (317 pts.) combined for a school-record 677 points. This year they have 769 points with Meely/Scott at 881 points.

CONFERENCE ROAD WARRIORS ... Colorado has won three straight conference games on the road, a first since 2000-01; while not the loftiest of achievements, it hasn't been common at CU. Tad Boyle's teams have won two straight Pac-12 road games twice, something the Buffaloes managed only four times in the 15 years as a member of the Big 12. And in the 49 seasons Colorado was in the Big 7/Big 8 (1948-96), it won two straight league road games a grand total of 13 times.

The others: Burdette Haldorson (4), Jim Davis (3), Cliff Meely (2), Jamahl Mosley (2) GÇó Roberson is the first CU player to grab that many multiple times since Mosley accomplished it twice during 2000-2001 (vs. Missouri, vs. Baylor at KC). Prior to Mosley, it hadn't happened since Meely did it in during the 1969-70 and 1970-71 seasons. Roberson and Mosley are the only two players to accomplish the feat in the past 43 years.
