Kizirian Breaks Weight Throw Record At AFA

January 09, 2015 | Track and Field

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — University of Colorado senior Alex Kirizian broke his own CU weight throw record on Friday night with a mark of 69 feet, two inches to win the Air Force Collegiate Open.

His throw was over four feet further than CSU's Jake Schneeberger (64-9.75), who was the only other competitor to throw over 60 feet. Kizirian's previous record was 68-4.50 and was also set at the Air Force Academy on January 24, 2014.

Kizirian also had a good showing in the shot put, recording a personal best of 55-6.25 for third overall.

A couple other Buffs recorded first place finishes in their first meet after winter break. Mark Jones won the high jump after clearing 6-8.75 and Jaylyn Mars was the top performer in the 400, crossing the finish in 49.54.

Several Buffs had runner-up finishes, including four in the sprints. Austin Mitsch clocked in at 21.95 in the 200-meter dash, while Ana Holland recorded a time of 24.52 in the women's 200. Lindsy Mattson was second in the 400 (58.04) and Mariah Slack took home silver in the 800 with a time of 2:27.42.

Another pair of Buffs placed second in their respective field events. Rajon O'Quinn cleared 5-7 in the high jump, while Abrianna Torres recorded a mark of 19-1.25 in the long jump. Mariah Walker came away with a third-place finish in the shot put, recording a toss of 45-1.75.

CU was well represented in several events. The women finished 2-4-7-8-10 in the 200. Behind Holland, Tashay Brown placed fourth (25.32), Mattson was seventh (25.99), Torres was eighth (26.07) and Mia Holland placed 10th (26.25). The men also had a dominating performance in the 400, going 1-4-5-8. Darrin Hayes was fourth behind Mars (50.14), Erik Gaytan placed fifth (50.18) and Garrett Losty took eighth (50.40).

The Buffs are back in action January 16-17 when they host the Potts Indoor Invitational at Balch Fieldhouse. For more information, go to CUBuffs.com.
