Buffs Open Season With Perfect 6-0 Day In Doubles

September 22, 2016 | Tennis

BOULDER - Colorado's tennis team opened the 2016-17 season with a perfect day, winning all six of its doubles matches at the CU Invitational at CU's South Campus Tennis Complex in Boulder. The Buffaloes are joined in the four-day tournament by competitors from Arkansas, Colorado State, Georgetown and New Mexico.

WHAT HAPPENED: The format of Thursday's doubles action was three rounds of pre-determined matchups. The Buffs breezed through the first round as Chloe Hule and Nuria Ormeño Ruiz blew past Celine Voss and Caroline Henderson (CSU) 6-0 and Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Kyra Wojcik swept Solene Crawley and Sandra Keta (CSU) 6-0.

The second round, again against pairs from Colorado State, the results were similar in CU's domination. Louise Ronaldson made her CU debut with Ormeño Ruiz as the pair downed Madison Porter and Riley Reeves 6-1. Andrinopoulos and Hule defeated Alyssa Grijalva and Emily Kolbow 6-3.

The third round was a little tighter as the Buffs faced their stiffest competition of the day. Andrinopoulos and Ormeño Ruiz still paired for a quick 6-1 win over Madeline Foley and Maggie Psyhogeos (Georgetown). However, Ronaldson and Wojcik fell behind 3-0 in their doubles match to CSU's Grijalva and Kolbow before rallying to win six straight games for a 6-3, come-from-behind victory.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Ormeño Ruiz and Andrinopoulos both went 3-0 on the day to open their seasons. Ormeño Ruiz moved into the top 30 at CU in all-time combined singles and doubles wins as she now sits with 103 total victories, including 42 doubles wins, placing 28th as she moved past three Buffs. She also cracked the top 40 in career doubles wins for the first time in her career.

UP NEXT: Singles play at the CU Invitational will begin on Friday at 9 a.m. at the South Campus Tennis Complex. The tournament will feature two draws of 14 players with a consolation bracket set up for each draw. Ormeño Ruiz is the tournament's top seed as she is ranked No. 110 nationally and she earned a first-round bye. Two rounds of singles play will be conducted Friday.

Postgame Quotes
Nicole Kenneally, head coach
On the team's performance Thursday
"We've been in practice for a week. I like what we saw today in regards to effort and working together and competitiveness. We did a lot of high-percentage things well, which bodes to success. We took care of business in several situations. Even though the scores looked pretty lopsided, with the no-ad scoring format, our conversion rate was very high, which is critical."

On the importance of starting the season strong
"Going 6-0 on the day is great. You couldn't really ask for anything better. I like where we are (right now) and we're ahead of where we were last Wednesday (when practice started)."
