Arizona State Proves Too Much for Buffs

March 11, 2017 | Tennis

TEMPE, ARIZONA – No. 40 Arizona State proved to be too much for University of Colorado Tennis team as the host Sun Devils won 4-0 on Saturday at the Whiteman Tennis Center. The loss to Arizona State completed the Buffs Pac-12 weekend opener and fall to a 0-2 start to the conference season.

WHAT HAPPENED
ASU sent out two ranked double teams to face the Buffs, and the Sun Devils women held serve on their rankings winning the doubles point 2-0.

The doubles team of Nuria Ormeño Ruiz and Kyra Wojcik dropped the first match for CU playing the third spot against the nationally ranked No. 59 tandem of Kassidy Jump and Sammi Hampton 6-2. ASU went on to claim the doubles point at the number one position with the No. 44 nationally ranked duo of Alex Osborne and Nicole Fossa-Huergo defeating the Buff team of Louise Ronaldson and Chloe Hule 6-1.

The win gave ASU a 1-0 lead in the overall match score heading into singles play.

In the number four position, Chloe Hule dropped her match in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to ASU's Nicole Fossa-Huergo. Hule battled hard against Fossa-Huergo but was not able to close the gap fast enough and dropped both sets.

ASU grabbed its second singles point at the No. 2 spot when No. 48 ranked Sammi Hampton defeated Ronaldson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.

The clinching point for ASU came at the number six slot when Gussie O'Sullivan defeated CU's Brigitte Beck in another straight set completion 6-1, 6-0. After dropping the first set, Beck dug deep in the second set but could not hold off O'Sullivan.

Ormeño Ruiz, Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Kyra Wojcik all were unable to finish their matches as ASU clinched the entire match at the No. 6 slot. Ormeño Ruiz was putting up a strong fight against No. 97 ranked Kassidy Jump as they traded the first two sets and had begun the third when the match was called.

QUOTABLE (Head Coach, Nicole Kenneally)
It's been a tough couple of days playing two tough PAC-12 teams in their home environments.  ASU and Arizona both played real solid tennis. We have an opportunity to continue to learn about the positives of our games and the improvements we can make. It's exciting to be in PAC-12 season and look forward to WSU and Washington to come to Boulder.
