Buffs Battle for First Pac-12 Win

March 24, 2017 | Tennis

BOULDER— After a long streak on the road the Buffs finally returned home to Boulder to take on and defeat Washington State 4-3 to claim their first Pac-12 victory of the season, here Friday afternoon at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center.

WHAT HAPPENED
Doubles
The Buffaloes, secured the doubles point for the first time this conference season to start the day. The duo of Louise Ronaldson and Chloe Hule finished first knocking off Washington State's Aneta Mikosovska and Victoria Matejenic 6-3. Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Ilana Oleynik dropped their match 6-4, so it came down to court two for the No. 2 doubles matchup. The Buffs stuck in there and finally Nuria Ormeño Ruiz and Kyra Wojcik pulled out the win against Washington State's Barbora Michalkova and Melissa Ates 7-5.

Singles
The match came down to the No. 6 singles spot with Brigitte Beck. Beck sailed through the first set winning it 6-1, but Tomey battled back in the second to win it 6-4 and push to a third set. The duo went back and forth but Beck settled in and earned her 6-4 victory to solidify the Buffs win.

The Buffaloes were very competitive in singles play on Friday afternoon. Nuria Ormeño Ruiz battled to a tiebreaker in the first set at the No. 1 singles spot before edging out Washington State's Barbora Michalkova 7-6. Ormeño Ruiz fought hard and coasted to her second set win 6-2. She extended the Buffs lead 2-0 over the Cougars.

Louise Ronaldson had some tough competition in the No. 2 singles position as she battled Guzal Yusupova of Washington State. Ronaldson dropped the first set 6-4 and really fought hard in her second set but could not overcome Yusupova as Washington State earned its first point of the match.

Annabelle Andrinopoulos tried to mount a strong comeback to extend her match to a third set but fell short and dropped it against Washinton State's Aneta Miksovska 6-4, 6-4. Andrnopoulos lost the first set, was down 5-2 in the second set and fought back to almost extend but hit the net on her final serve to give Miksovska the 6-4 victory.

The next match to finish was the No. 4 singles spot, where CU's Chloe Hule dropped her match to Washington State's Victoria Matejevic in tough straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Washington State then went up one point over the Buffs.

Kyra Wojcik had a clutch performance today defeating Melissa Ates in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to make it a tie match again.

QUOTABLE (Head Coach Nicole Kenneally)
On Brigitte Beck's Clinching Performance
"Biggest win of her career. Waiting for her to have that opportunity and for her to respond in the way she responded was phenomenal. She really came through. Biggest win of her career so far."

On The First Pac-12 Win
"Obviously every single Pac-12 win is hard earned; and this one was as well. We knew that going in. Washington State is always a team that shows up and competes hard and we knew that it was going to come down to the end. We were mentally ready for that. Even though it was 4-3 and had three losses in the singles lineup, ultimately I think competitively it was our best match as a team, top to bottom, just competing the whole time. That is huge and that is what you have to do in the Pac-12. You have to go out and earn everything that you get. You have to go earn.
