Petra Hyncicova was named the Dick Schoenberger Memorial Award winner, given to the teamās outstanding skier
BOULDER ā The University of Colorado ski team handed out its annual team awards at its end of season banquet Wednesday night in the Byron R. White Club Level in the east suites at Folsom Field.
Ā
The 2017 Buffaloes won a 28th RMISA title and finished second at the NCAA Skiing Championships that were held in New Hampshire back in March.Ā Colorado has now finished as the runner-up seven times, with eight titles, in 27 seasons under head coach Richard Rokos.Ā All-time overall, CU has 20 championships and 12 runner-up finishes in the sport.
Ā
Junior Petra Hyncicova won the Dick Schoenberger Memorial Award, given to the outstanding skier. Schoenberger was a close friend and supporter of the ski team for many years until his death in 1963. The award is CU's longest standing award, given every year since 1963. Past winners include Buddy Werner, Bill Marolt, Spider Sabich, assistant coach Jana Weinberger, Maria Grevsgaard and Rune Oedegaard.
Ā
Hyncicova became the 15th woman to sweep the Nordic races at the NCAA Championships and the fourth CU skier, joining Line Selnes (1998), Weinberger (2006) Maria Grevsgaard (2008). On the season she finished fifth or better in all eight races she competed in and won five of them.
Ā
She was the 2017 RMISA Skier of the Year for women's Nordic in a vote by the league coaches and her wins at the NCAA Championships gave her two more first-team All-America honors to her resume (five total All-America honors, three first-team). Hyncicova also represented the Czech Republic National Team for a second consecutive season when she competed at the 2017 FIS Nordic Junior and U23 World Ski Championships.
Ā
Freshman David Ketterer was given the Buddy Werner Memorial Award. The Buddy Werner Award was named after the man synonymous with competitive skiing in America. He was the United States' first international skiing star who set a fine example and a scholarship commemorating him was established in 1983 for a deserving team member.
Ā
Ketterer dominated the men's alpine scene this winter, tying the CU alpine record for wins in a season with seven. His sweep of the slalom and giant slalom titles made him just the fifth skier in NCAA history (and third Buff) to sweep the national titles in the same year. Like Hyncicova, Ketterer was named the RMISA Skier of the Year for men's alpine.
Ā
The Outstanding Career Award went to senor Mads Stroem. Stroem tied the program record for most All-American selections in a career with eight and also tied the program record for most first-team selections with seven. He was a three-time NCAA individual national champion, tying for the second most NCAA titles by any Buffalo in school history. He was the 2016 Men's Nordic National Skier of the Year. In his career he won 14 races, ranking in a tie for fourth in CU history, and earned 28 podium finishes (top 3) in 39 career races.
Ā
The Spencer Nelson Award, given in the spirit of the former CU skier who lost his life just prior to his sophomore season at CU in August 2011, is awarded annually by Spencer's parents, Peter Nelson and Peggy Smith. It is given to those who overcome adversity and demonstrate a strong work ethic. This season sophomore Petter Reistad was selected for the award, which is a belt buckle, similar to the awards presented to podium finishers at the CU Invitational, also named in Spencer's memory.
Ā
Reistad had an elite sophomore season, earning first-team All-American honors in both the classic and freestyle races after finishing fourth in both events at the NCAA Championships. The first-team All-RMISA selection finished seventh or better in all 11 races with one victory and his five podium appearances were the most of any Buff on the men's Nordic team.
Ā
The Laura Sharpe Flood Award was given to freshman Bobby Moyer. Given out every year since 1991, the Laura Sharpe Flood Award is given to the skier who best exemplifies the spirit, enthusiasm and dedication both on the mountain and in the classroom. She tragically lost her life on April 3, 1989, after losing control on a training run at Eldora.
Ā
Moyer in his first season with the Buffaloes competed in all 12 races through the RMISA Championships, finishing 11 of them. He had three finishes inside the top 15, with all three of them placing 13th in slalom races, which include his strong showing at the RMISA Championships.
Ā
The Lucie Hanusova Award has been given every season since 1999 and is given to the team member or members who overcomes adversity and challenges with smiles and enthusiasm. This year that award was given to freshman Isabella Fidjeland. Fidjeland battled through a non-skiing injury that she suffered in the fall, but came back to finish 10th in both the slalom and giant slalom at the RMISA Championships. She then competed with the Buffs back east in New Hampshire in her very first NCAA Championships.
Ā
The Outstanding Alpine Woman Award was given to sophomore Nora Christensen. She had eight top 10 and a pair of podium finishes on the season. For a second consecutive season, she finished fifth in the slalom at the NCAA Championships to once again earn first-team All-America honors ā the only Buff on the women's alpine team to earn All-America honors this season.
Ā
The Outstanding Nordic Woman Award was given to sophomore Christina Rolandsen. Rolandsen finished ninth or better in every race she competed in this season and recorded four podium finishes. She went on to claim two first-team All-America honors by finishing fourth in the 5K classic and third in the 15K freestyle races at the NCAA Championships.
Ā
