Buffs Head To Washington For Two Road Matches After Bye

March 29, 2018 | Tennis

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team made good use of its bye week to prepare for two Pac-12 road matches this coming weekend, as the Buffaloes will face the 40th-ranked Washington Huskies (10-8 overall, 0-3 in the Pac-12) and the No. 31-ranked Washington State Cougars (17-2 overall, 2-1 in the Pac-12).

Previously, the Buffs lost a hard fought match, 4-2, to the California Golden Bears on March 16. The two points were the most CU has ever earned in a match against Cal (the Buffs are 0-7 all-time vs. the Golden Bears).

Due to impending inclement weather, the teams agreed to play singles first in hopes of completing an official match before the weather moved in. Doubles matches were not started following Cal's clinch through singles play.

In doubles play this season, CU has won the doubles point in 10 of 12 matches so far this season and are led by the pairing of sophomore Chloe Hule and Beck, who are 9-1 this season and 15-5 overall.

In singles play, the Buffs led 1-0 early on after senior Kyra Wojcik took down Cal's Hana Mraz 6-3, 6-1 on court No. 5. After falling behind 2-1 in the first set, Wojcik rebounded to win four straight games to take a 5-2 lead. In the second set, Wojcik lost the first game before breezing through the next six games.

On court No. 1, CU's 113th-ranked Linda Huang fell to the Bear's 35th-ranked Anna Bright in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. After falling behind 3-1 in the opening set, Huang won three of the next four games to tie it up at 4-4. However, Bright proved to be too much in the final two games. In the second set, Huang fell to a 5-0 deficit and could not recover.

Despite the loss, Huang leads the Buffs in singles play with a record of 8-5 this season (1-2 in Pac-12 play) and a record of 19-8 overall.

In the No. 6 singles match, junior Brigitte Beck came back after falling in the first set to win the match, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 over Cal's Jasie Dunk. Beck won three out of four deuce points to take the second set and in the third set, Beck won four of her final five games to win the set and the match.

Colorado's match against the 25th-ranked Stanford Cardinal on Saturday, March 17 was cancelled due to persistent rains throughout the day in the Bay Area.

With an overall record of 8-5 and a 1-2 Pac-12 record, Colorado will take on the Huskies on Friday at 2:30 p.m. MT at the Quillian Tennis Stadium, or at the Nordstrom Tennis Center if the match is moved inside due to weather. On Sunday at 11:00 a.m. MT, CU will face off against the Cougars at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts, or pending bad weather, at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
