Scholl Takes Elite Mile Victory

February 01, 2019 | Track and Field

BOULDER – Junior Tabor Scholl took command in the women's elite mile race Friday evening for the University of Colorado, winning the first running event at the CU Invitational in a time of 4:41.85.

The elite mile races occurred Friday evening in a packed Indoor Practice Facility and displayed 15 of the best athletes entered in both genders. Scholl was paced strongly until 450 meters were remaining when she began to push ahead of the small lead pack and to the victory. The junior won the race by nearly five seconds, outpacing Sarah Feeny of Utah and Roisin Flanagan of Adams State who finished just under 4:47. The rest of the race came across nearly 10 seconds after the first three with Colorado runners Taylor Tuttle (4:59.36) and Holly Bent (5:00.70) finishing in 10th and 11th, respectfully.

"Tabor's mark 4:41.85 will probably convert to 4:35 or a smidgen under which will put her sixth or seventh in the country and has always advanced to the NCAA," said head coach Mark Wetmore on the women's mile. "That was the aspiration, to get her a qualifying mark. Behind her, well there were some rusty women behind her that looked rusty. They have some work still to do. Some are young, some are not great up here at this elevation so we will see over the next couple of weeks how they do."

Scholl wasn't the only victor for the Buffaloes, as freshman Jeremy Cody took the high jump title with a clearance of 2.06m (6-9). The freshman has taken both home victories in the high jump this season.

The largest areas of improvement came in the weight throw today as three Buffaloes threw lifetime bests. Caleb Penner had the largest improvement of the day, throwing 60-centimeters farther that he ever has before with a toss of 16.30m (53-5.75) for seventh. Behind him was freshman Tyler Sconce who had a 41-centimeter improvement with his toss of 13.97m (45-10), good for 12th.

On the women's side, Elisa Grandemange broke the 17-meter barrier on her fifth throw with a toss of 17.17 meters (56-4). She improved her lifetime best for the second-straight weekend, this time by 20 centimeters. She finished sixth in the event while Mariah Walker (14.99m | 49-2.25) finished 10th.

Early in the morning, freshman Josh Farmer finished the men's heptathlon third overall. He broke the 5,000-point mark with a strong finish in the 1,000 to score 5,005 points. Davis Butte finished sixth in the event scoring 4,304 points.

One more personal best came in the high jump as freshman Kylee Harr cleared 1.71 meters (5-7.25) to finish second in the event. The improvement is a centimeter better than her previous best.

Also for Colorado, Cheyenne Cheshier and Sarah Hopkins competed in the women's triple jump. The duo finished eighth and 10th overall with marks of 11.16m (36-7.5) and 10.97m (36-0), respectfully.

"Well lots of events tomorrow, looking forward to everyone we have going," said Wetmore on tomorrow's events. "I think Duane McClurkin Jr. is in the best shape of his life, he is going to do some good things. The 3ks should be pretty good, the women's 800 is very loaded. Elissa Mann is going to have her hands full there is a sub-2 minute professional runner in there. A lot of good things, a whole day of exciting events tomorrow."

Nearly all of the field events concluded today with the exception of the shot put, as CU returns to action tomorrow on the track with the first start at 11 a.m.
