Dengerud Wins RMISA Championship, Buffs Second After Day 1

February 20, 2019 | Skiing

PALMER, Alaska—Freshman Erik Dengerud won the Individual RMISA Championship in the men's 10K freestyle race, propelling the University of Colorado ski team to second place and just two points behind the leader after the first day of the 70th Annual RMISA Championships here Wednesday at Government Peak.

Dengerud's win is the first of his career and four other Buffs finished in the top 10.  Sophomore Sondre Bollum finished fifth and junior Andrew Potyk 10th in the men's race while senior Christina Rolandsen hit the podium in third place and sophomore Hedda Baangman finished sixth in the women's 5k race.

"Overall, I'm happy," CU Nordic coach Jana Weinberger.  "Erik getting the win is good, very good.  He's been moving in the right direction all season, every race has been better and it's good to see him get his first win."

The Buffs won the men's race with 90 points and finished second in the women's race with 78 points for a total of 168, just two points behind Utah's total of 170 through two of eight races.  Host Alaska Anchorage is in third 33 points behind Utah with 137 points.

The RMISA Championships will continue Friday with Nordic freestyle races and alpine giant slalom races.  The UAA Invitational will continue Thursday with giant slalom races.

TEAM: The team standings are a Pac-12 showdown between Utah and Colorado, separated by just two points, 170-168.  Host Alaska Anchorage is third with 137 points followed by New Mexico in fourth with 121.  Denver rounds out the top five with 116 points with Montana State (103) and Alaska Fairbanks (93) concluding the team scoring.

NORDIC MEN: Erik Dengerud's win came in a time of 26:51.3 as he was the only skier sub 27 minutes, winning by 14.4 seconds over New Mexico's Ricardo Izquierdo-Bernier (27:05.7).  Sondre Bollum's time of 27:29.7 was good for fifth and just 10.1 seconds off the podium.  Andrew Potyk had his career best freestyle finish in 10th place in 28:04.5.  Freshman Wyatt Gebhardt finished 16th in 28:19.4, senior Alvar Alev took 26th in 28:57.4 and freshman Tyler Terranova finished 36th in 30:54.8.

NORDIC WOMEN: Christina Rolandsen hit the podium for the second straight freestyle race, coming in third in a time of 15:23.6, 18.0 seconds behind race winner Guro Jordheim from Utah (15:05.6).  Hedda Baangman finished sixth in a time of 15:49.7 for her seventh top 10 finish of the season.  Junior Anne Siri Lervik finished 16th in 16:13.5 and freshman Ezra Smith gook 22nd in 16:24.0.

WHAT IT MEANS: The Buffs got off to a solid start at the RMISA Championships with an individual and team win in the men's race and good showing on the women's side with five Buffs securing top 10 finishes.  All five Buffs who finished in the top 10 also improved their NCAA Qualification seeding positions.  The Buffs have been stronger in classic races this season, scoring 37 more points in classic in men's races and 18 more in women's races so far this season.  Friday will be key for the RMISA Championships with the conclusion of the Nordic portion of the meet and the start of the alpine portion.

NOTEWORTHY: Dengerud's win at the RMISA Championships represents the Buffs 70th Individual RMISA Championship in CU history, more than any other school.  It's the Buffs 45th individual title in Nordic action, 21st in freestyle races and 11th in men's freestyle.  It's the first individual title since David Ketterer won the GS race in 2017 and  the first in Nordic action since Mads Stroem swept the races in 2016.  This decade, the Buffs have dominated men's Nordic action as Dengerud is the fourth Buff to win a race at RMISA Championships and the Buffs have won 12 of the 19 such races this decade.  Dengerud will be looking for the Buffs fifth sweep this decade, joining Matt Gelso in 2010, Rune Oedegaard in 2012 and '14 and Mads Stroem in 2015 and '16.

QUOTEWORTHY:
Jana Weinberger:
"Erik's win is very good. Sondre had a good race, he was a little tired at the end, he had a few splits in second place and ended up fifth.  Andrew had a great result, a top 10, and another good result from Wyatt.  Alvar was struggling with his shins, which is why he was a little off today."

"Christina hit the podium and wasn't too far behind first place.  Hopefully with a couple of more weeks, she can fine one more gear and she can beat those two.  Hedda had a good race, she thought she did a little better than she did, but there were a lot of really strong racers today.  With Anne Siri, I'm not really sure what happened there, I think she's a little tired from the week. Hopefully she can get it together for Friday's race."

"It'll be good to have an off day tomorrow, some kids are getting tired, we'll take it easy tomorrow and be ready for Friday. We're just two points down and we've been a little better in classic this year."

UP NEXT: Action returns to the UAA Invitational as the alpine teams will finally compete in Alaska with giant slalom races at Aleyska on Thursday.  Friday will see half the RMISA Championships take place with the final Nordic races at Kincaid Park and the giant slalom races at Aleyska.  Both meets will conclude with slalom races, the UAA Invitational on Saturday and the RMISA Championships on Sunday.
