Colorado Opens Outdoor Season in Jerry Quiller Classic
March 14, 2019 | Track and Field
BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program opens the 2019 outdoor track and field season at home Friday and Saturday in the annual Jerry Quiller Classic at Potts Field.
Â
Friday is scheduled to begin field events at 3 p.m. with the hammer throw, javelin and triple jump for both men and women's, with the remainder of the field events and all running events scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The Buffs welcome teams from Air Force, Colorado Christian, Johnson and Wales and Valley City State along with a large number of unattached individuals from across the Front Range.
Â
CU will compete in nearly every individual event but will not be seen in relays or the 100-meter dash this weekend. The sprinters will focus on a few events, while the combined event women are tabbed to compete across the 200, 100 hurdles and high jump. The distance squads will compete in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000 with Karina Mann, Madison Boreman and Annie Hill looking to put down fast times in the 800.
Â
Another key events will be the men's 400 with the MPSF Champion Duane McClurkin Jr. entered alongside Jon Maas. The women's 200 will feature not only the four combined athlete women of Michaela Wenning, Driana Mustin, Maja Wichhart-Donzo and Kylee Harr, but also Valerie Welch and Samantha Crosmer. The women's 100 hurdles has a similar look with Wenning, Wichhart-Donzo, Welch, Dani Johnson, Kylie Davis and Mustin.
Â
Also for Colorado, the throws will be a large focus in all four events. The men's discus will include Henry Carlson off of an indoor redshirt, Tyler Sconce, combined event transfer Wyatt Rhoads, Caleb Penner and Brock Knechtel. The women's javelin has all four combined event women and Elisa Grandemange throwing Friday afternoon.
Â
The only events CU is not represented in are the 100-meter dashes, both relays, the steeplechase, pole vault and men's 200 and triple jump.
Â
The Buffaloes are coming off of the NCAA Indoor Championships where the men placed 16th and the women finished tied for 33rd. Following the outdoor opener, CU will compete at CSU next Saturday before beginning the travelling section of the schedule with meets at Texas Relays, Stanford Invitational and Tom Benich Invitational at Northern Colorado the final weekend of March.
