Buffs Travel to Washington for Two Matches
February 10, 2023 | Tennis
BOULDER, Colo. – The Colorado Buffaloes Women's Tennis team travels to Spokane Washington for
back to back matches against Gonzaga and Eastern Washington on Saturday starting at 9:00 a.m. MST.
The team is currently off to the best start since the 2020-21 season at 3-1, in large part due to the
addition of Junior transfer Aya El Sayed.  El Sayed transferred from the New Jersey Institute of
Technology after her sophomore year and has three years of eligibility remaining.
Since arriving at Colorado, El Sayed has made a big impact in the tennis program. In her first tournament
as a Buff, El Sayed won the Battle In the Bay Consolation Championship. During that run El Sayed battled
winning all but one match in three sets.
She has continued her strong start as a Buff this spring starting the season 3-1 at No. 4 singles, winning
all of her matches in straight sets. Along with the wins in dominating fashions, El Sayed has been clutch,
clinching two of the three wins so far this season for the Buffs. None bigger than the last match against
San Francisco with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 victory clinched the match in a 4-3 victory for the Buffs.
As well as starting strong in singles, El Sayed looks to form a potent doubles duo with Senior Antonia
Balzert. After going 5-5 during the fall, the duo has started to figure out how to play together this spring
after getting a convincing 6-3 win against San Francisco in their last match. The duo will look to continue
the winning ways this weekend in Washington.
The Buffs will travel to Washington for an unconventional back to back matches this Saturday against
Gonzaga and Eastern Washington. They will start the day with Gonzaga at 9:00 a.m. MST. The Buffs will
look to stay undefeated against Gonzaga, currently standing 2-0 with the last victory coming last year in
Boulder 5-2. Mila Stanojevic won at No. 2 singles last year 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, while Ellen Puzak got the last
point of the day at No. 6 singles winning 6-4, 3-6, 10-4. As well as current No. 3 doubles team Ellen
Puzak and Betina Tokac won at the same position 6-2 to help clinch the doubles point.
Directly following the match against Gonzaga, the Buffs will take on Eastern Washington. In only one
matchup in 2017, the Buffs won the match 6-1.
"This will be our first true road trip," coach Anthony Pham said. "We played Air force and Denver, but
those were day trips. We will make sure we address some of the things that we saw against San
Francisco and do a better job in practice this week. We will make sure we are ready to battle against a
good Gonzaga and Eastern Washington team. Playing a double header is going to be unique, so we will
need to be ready for that."
Colorado will look to start the season 5-1 for the first time since the 2020-21 season.
