Colorado Advances Four In The Big 12 Championship

May 13, 2006 | Track and Field

WACO, Texas ? Stephen Pifer and Anthony Chiulli went 1-2 to advance to the finals of the 1,500-meter run during “Preliminary” Saturday at the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships here Saturday at the Hart-Patterson Track & Field Complex in Waco, Texas. Liza Pasciuto and George Pincock also advanced in their events.

Pifer finished in 3:47.43, winning the first heat and was the overall leader. Anthony Chiulli was second overall with a mark of 3:50.36. He led the second heat. Both qualified for the finals tomorrow afternoon. Daniel Kenney took 12th with a time of 3:52.56, Kenyon Neuman finished 22nd (4:07.21) and Rob Thayer finished 25th (4:13.66).

Pasciuto qualified for the finals in the women's 1,500 (4:29.94). Pasciuto finished just one-thousandth of a second behind Baylor's Erin Bedell, who finished in 4:29.93.

Pincock advanced to the finals in the 200. He recorded the sixth-best time in the field at 21.19. Pincock placed 12th in the 400 with a mark of 47.31.

“We advanced the people that we were confident in advancing,” head coach Mark Wetmore said. “We had some developmental people that we were hoping might get close. Daniel Kenny had a very good race with the windy condition, his second fastest time ever and just missed by six-tenths getting through. It was a good race for him.”

In the women's shot put, Carly Newlands took sixth, earning her first Big 12 honor in her final attempt. She notched a toss of 48-08.00, which is also the seventh best in CU history. Newlands now owns three of the top seven throws at CU.

“We tell them all year that marks done in home meets and little meets are nice, but scoring in the conference meet is what it's all supposed to lead up to,” Wetmore said. “Although she didn't have her best throw of the year, that's not the most important thing. The most important thing is getting on the podium, so she should feel really good about it.”

“Every year we come here with people we are confident in scoring for us. People we are sure won't this year, but are here for developmental reasons and then always a group of people that are in the middle there that just need a pretty good day to just sneak through and get a point or two. And not a lot of those people did that this year. Maybe we hoped for too much from them and maybe next year is their year, but they do need to understand that this is what it all leads up to and this is the day that they are supposed to perform.”

Amberly Casey competed in the long jump and took 11th with a leap of 19-03.25. In the men's discus, James Begley finished 12th. He recorded a throw of 165-05.

In the men's 100, Ryan Campbell was the first Buffalo to cross the finish line and earned a 13th-place finish. His time was 10.67, just five-hundredths off of his pr. Lionel Lawson Jr, took 16th (10.77) and Sam Napp finished 17th (10.84).

Chris Abuan finished 11th in both the 200 and 400. Nate Terry recorded a 14th-place finish in the 200 with a mark of 47.51. Also in the 200, Napp came in 14th, Campbell was 17th and Lawson took 20th.

Dyamond Seay led the Buffalo women in the 200 and 400. She took 18th in the 200 (25.32) and was 20th in the 400 (57.36). Jackie Sturm took 20th in the 200 and was 22nd in the 400. Veronica Maul finished 21st in the 200 and 23rd in the 400.
