Wacker, Burrell Earn Top Honors At Beach Invite

April 17, 2011 | Track and Field

CERRITOS, Calif. - The University of Colorado track and field team had an impressive showing at the Beach Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State on Saturday.

Senior Andy Wacker and junior Megan Burrell each recorded first-place finishes in their respective event.  Wacker, running in the men's 1,500-meter run, recorded a personal record of 3 minutes, 49.20 seconds and now owns the best performance in the event by a Buff this season.  Burrell PR'd in the women's 5,000-meter run, recording a time of 17:14.92.

Three other men had personal records on the day.  Those include Niklas Cederstrom who threw for a distance of 157 feet and 1 inch in the men's hammer throw and Jonny Stevens, who recorded a time of 9:30.13 in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase.  Following his outstanding performance in the steeplechase on Thursday at the Mt. Dillon Silje was also a standout performer for the Buffs on Saturday as he placed fifth in the men's 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:52.47.

In addition to Burrell's win, the Colorado women also had great results on the day.  Sophomore Emily Hunsucker and senior Max Van Dyke recorded PR's in the women's hammer throw. Hunsucker threw 166-08, the best performance by a Buff this season to place seventh overall, while Van Dyke recorded a toss of 159-11 to place 10th.

Finishing in third place in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, senior Emily Hanenburg ran for a personal best time of 10:55.36.

Some of the Buff sprinters competed at the CSU-Pueblo Invite on Saturday as well. Toi Windham led the women with a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.35), while Brooke Regan earned third place in the 200 (56.88).
