Buffs Excel at Colorado Invitational

April 11, 2015 | Track and Field

BOULDER —It was another spectacular day for the Buffaloes as they hosted the Colorado Invitational on a picture perfect day at Potts Field with many coming away with first place finishes.

The Buffs started the day off with a pair of wins in the steeplechase. Erin Clark and Connor Winter each came away with the victory in their event debut. Clark led a pack of Buffs that finished 1-2-3-4, finishing in 10:33.27. She was well in front of her teammate, Val Constien, who finished second in 11:09.03. Eryn Blakely was third in 11:29.00 and Lucy May placed fourth in 11:41.98.

On the men's side, Winter won in 9:10.60. Adam Peterman was third by the narrowest of margins, finishing in 9:18.05 behind Hillary Bor, who crossed the line in 9:18.01.

“Both Erin and Connor were running their first 3,000-meter steeplechases,” head coach Mark Wetmore said. “Both of those marks will qualify for the NCAA preliminary round. In debut races that's very impressive. I don't know which one was more impressive but they both are certainly going to keep improving. In the case of Connor, he just started jumping over things about three weeks ago so we were really excited about those. Those were good.”

Kaitlyn Benner recorded her second first-place finish of the season, this time winning the 1,500-meter run in 4:30.08. She won the 3,000 earlier this season at the Jerry Quiller Classic and recently raced to a 27th place finish at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in March.

“Just a couple weeks ago, she was 10,000 miles from here in China running four miles in mud,” Wetmore said. “To come here and run 1,500 meters at elevation, not long thereafter, is impressive. Her time, when it's adjusted for the elevation, will also likely qualify for the NCAA preliminary round but this won't be her primary event. She's in the 5,000 in a week and she's going to go really fast.”

Ana Holland continued her hot streak, this time performing well in the 100. She won the event in 11.69, tying the fourth best time in school history. It was also the fastest time run by a Buff since 2001 when Amaris Buchanan clocked in at 11.69 at the Big 12 Championships.

“Ana just missed the school record in not perfect conditions here today,” Wetmore said. “It was a good day for Colorado in early April but not perfect for running really fast in the 100. She's really coming around after being out for almost a year. When she gets to competitions like the Pac-12 Championships, against some of the best runners in the country, she'll be even better.”

She was also a member of the women's 4x100-meter relay that won in 45.79, the fifth best time in CU history. The other members of the team were Mia Holland, Tashay Brown and Eileen Gehring.

The men's 400-meter hurdles was renamed the Kyle MacIntosh 400-meter hurdles prior to the race to honor former Buff Kyle MacIntosh who died in late January after a battle with cancer. His teammates Jaron Thomas and Garrett Losty finished 1-2 in the race. Thomas earned a season best time of 52.35 for the win, while Losty also recorded his season best time of 53.57.

“Kyle's dad shot the gun [before the race] and we'll keep that renamed for Kyle for a long time,” Wetmore said. “Jaron showed up today and had a nice run which was his best time of the year by quite a bit. He's on pace to be where he was a year ago which ended up scoring highly for us in the conference meet. So, he's finally clicking. It takes a while in the 400-hurdles. It's a technical event and you need warm weather. You can't practice it indoors. If you have interruptions due to the weather in the spring, you just have to wait. He was behind a little bit technically a few weeks ago but he's all caught up.”

Austin Mitsch continued the winning ways for the Buffs in the 200 with a victory in 21.33.

“Austin had a very nice 200,” Wetmore said. “Again, it was windy, there was a negative wind. I think he's threatening to go below 21 this year which is really good for us. We're really excited about that.”

The Buffs also saw success in the field events. Alex Kizirian won the hammer throw with a personal best toss of 202-5, which he recorded on his second attempt of the day.

“He keeps inching, or centi-metering it out. It was a good series for him as well. He had three or four good throws yesterday. We all love Alex and are happy to see him do well,” Wetmore said.

Wetmore was also very pleased with Abrianna Torres' performance at the meet. She set a PR in the high jump, tying for second, after clearing 5-5.75. Torres was also second in the javelin with a personal-best toss of 124-02. In her third event, the 100-meter hurdles, she had another runner-up finish in 14.37.

“Abrianna had a quietly successful weekend,” Wetmore said. “She had a big PR in the javelin, a PR in the high jump and nearly in the hurdles. She gets a little bit lost because she's a heptathlete and none of those won, but when you say that's PRs in 3/7ths of her main event which is coming next Wednesday, she had a quietly very successful weekend.”

Next week is a busy week of competition for the Buffs. Many will compete at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., while many others will participate at the Bryan Clay Invite (Azusa, Calif.) and the Beach Invitational (Cerritos, Calif.).
