No. 31 Washington State Sweeps Buffs 4-0

April 01, 2018 | Tennis

PULLMAN, Wash. – No. 31 Washington State proved its national prominence with a 4-0 sweep over Colorado on Easter Sunday at WSU's Hollingbery Fieldhouse. The Buffs dropped to 8-7 overall and 1-4 in the Pac-12, while the Cougars improved to 19-2 and 4-1.

DOUBLES: The Buffs played a strong set of doubles after a rough round in Friday's loss at Washington, but the Cougars prevailed with the doubles point. WSU earned the first doubles win with relative ease, despite a late rally from the Buffs. Michaela Bayerlova and Aneta Miksovska jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held on for a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 position.

CU played much tougher at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. WSU clinched the point with a 7-5 win at No. 2. Tiffany Mylonas and Guzal Yusupova jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but Jeannez Daniel and Ilana Oleynik quickly got the break back to cut the deficit to 3-2, then held serve to even the set. Oleynik held serve in each of her three serving games, but Daniel was broken twice, including the final game.

Brigitte Beck and Chloe Hule stuck with Melisa Ates and Barbora Michalkova at No. 1 doubles with the scored tied 5-5 when the doubles point was clinched. CU won the deuce point three out of four times and battled back from an early 3-0 deficit.

SINGLES: Bayerlova, ranked No. 43 nationally, was too much for Linda Huang at No. 1 singles. The German put the Cougars in front 2-0, defeating Huang 6-2, 6-1. Huang was able to hold serve just twice on the day.

Yusupova and Hule played two very tight sets at No. 2 singles until Yusupova prevailed with a 6-4, 6-4 win for the Cougars. Hule twice fought back from down a break in the first set to extend play before succumbing late. Trailing 5-2 in the second set, Hule won consecutive games until Yusupova held serve with a 5-4 lead to take the set and the match. Yusupova won deuce point four of six times during the match.

No. 3 singles clinched the match with Mylonas sweeping Daniel 7-6 (0), 6-2. Both players were strong defensively in the first set with the two players combining to hold serve just four out of the 12 full games. The second set was all Mylonas as she carried over her tiebreaker momentum to jump out to a 3-1 lead in the 6-2 win.

Ronaldson's match at No. 4 singles against Michalkova was unfinished as she split the first two sets 6-3, 5-7 and was tied 1-1 in the third when play was completed. She breezed through the first set, holding serve four of five times. In the second set, she led 5-3 and had double match point with a 5-4 lead, but Michalkova won the final four games and overcame Ronaldson's match points to extend play to a third set.

NOTES: CU has now dropped five consecutive matches after opening the season 8-2 ... CU has now lost the doubles point in consecutive matches and is now 10-4 on doubles points ... the Buffs are now 3-5 all-time vs. WSU.

UP NEXT: CU will host No. 39 Southern California at 1:30 p.m. on Friday at CU's South Campus Tennis Complex.

POSTMATCH QUOTES:
Nicole Kenneally, head coach
On the doubles play
"They actually got off to some good leads on us, but we crawled ourselves back. We just competed, adjusted. No. 2 doubles was neck-and-neck the whole way. No. 1 doubles got down 4-1 and made it back to 4-all and 5-all and then at that point we lost the doubles point. It was great that we were making adjustments."

On singles play
"For Chloe, the deuce points were the clincher. In that second set, she was up 2-1 and then kind of went o-fer [on deuce points]. The good thing is she's putting herself in position, she's doing what she needs to do. She's putting herself in a position to win. Some of that is just that experience of playing higher in the lineup. I think she's learning a lot right now and that's where she's going to have to continue to stay cool, calm and collected and know that some of this is a learning time, but she's getting a lot of experience.

"At No. 3, Nez played a really competitive match. The style of game of her opponent is a little bit different and at times can be frustrating. That's one reason why [Mylonas] has such an unbelievable record this year [now 27-5 overall in singles play]. But Nez hung with her, but a couple of tough points got the best of her in the second. Ultimately, especially after having a tough match on Friday, coming out and competing that hard was essential and she did that, which was great.

"Lou played a terrific first two sets, got edged at the end of the second set. Even Linda, at times, was real competitive with her opponent.

"We're out there and the attitude and effort definitely aren't an issue. We're competing with people and continue to compete with teams that are all similarly ranked. It's one of those things that we've got to continue to work on those moments when we have opportunities to take it, rather than wait for them, to play the big points a tad bit smarter. For us to continue match-after-match and be competitive is great. We're not walking away, which is part of this team's identity in regards to the resiliency they have and to keep coming back."

On returning home next weekend
"We've got USC and UCLA next weekend at home so we will look to recover a little bit and get ready for USC on Friday. We had that streak [at home] where we had three matches in six days and we competed our tails off that whole time. So I think coming back home, it will be great to have some great weather [to play outside]. We get to get back to things that are comfortable."
