Buffs Host Potts Invitational This Weekend
January 08, 2019 | Track and Field
BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program will open the 2019 year hosting the third annual Potts Invitational this Friday and Saturday and will feature the five Front Range Division I programs with Wyoming, Colorado State, Northern Colorado and Air Force all joining.
Â
Friday will be a field event day with all events beginning at 3 p.m., while shot put and triple jump will kick off Saturday and conclude all field events before running begins at 1 p.m. Â
Â
The Buffaloes will be focused on the sprints and field events this weekend with a majority of the distance squad taking the weekend off. Some key events for Colorado will be the women's hurdles, the men's 200-meter dash and the throws.
Â
Kicking things off for the women will be a full squad of hurdlers that feature four of the fastest hurdlers in CU history. Last month Eriana Henderson led a weekend of hurdlers that posted personal bests that included Maja Wichhart-Donzo and Michaela Wenning in the pentathlon hurdle event. Henderson's 8.69 converted time is top-50 in the nation in this early season, while Valerie Welch ran the 55th-best time at 8.71. Also joining in the hurdling is Drianna Mustin and Dani Johnson, a transfer from Mira Costa College, and a pair of Colorado-native freshmen in Kylie Davis and Kylee Harr.
Â
Other Buffs competing this weekend will include triple jumpers Cheyenne Cheshier and Sarah Hopkins, both of which competed in December and went 11.64m (38-2ÂĽ) and 11.41m (37-5ÂĽ), respectfully. They will be joined in the jumps crew by Gunner Rigsby in the the horizontal jumps, while a numerous amount will compete in the vertical jumps as well. Giancarlo Narvarte, Jeremy Cody and Josh Farmer will all compete in the high jump, while Davis Butte will focus on the pole vault. All the women multis will also high jump including Wenning, Wichhart-Donzo, Mustin and Harr.
Â
In the men's sprints it is looking to be Jon Maas, Aaron McCoy and Duane McClurkin Jr. that should suit up for CU in the 200. The trio all have their named in the CU record books as Maas is sixth on the top-10 list in CU history with McClurkin in eighth. McCoy has his name seventh on the 400-hurdle list.
Â
Some key events to watch for this weekend will be the women's 60-meter dash, the horizontal jumps for the men and women, and the women's shot put.
Â
The first of the key events will come in the women's short sprints which could feature a 1-2 showdown with the two top-ranked sprinters in the nation in the early 2019 season. CSU's Marybeth Sant holds the meet record in the event and in December she ran a converted time of 7.28 to take the nation's lead early in the season. Just behind her is Jerayah Davis of Wyoming who posted a converted 55-meter time to 7.31. If those two go head-to-head they could destroy the facility record that Davis already has at 7.37.
Â
The other national leader that could compete in her event is Ja'la Henderson of Wyoming, who owns both facility records in the long and triple already. Henderson leads the nation with a long jump of 6.27m (20-7) in December, a mark that is 16 centimeters farther than her IPF facility record. She is also sixth in the nation in the triple jump with a mark that is around 30 centimeters shorter than her facility record at 13.08m (42-11) that she set last February. She will go up against Amelia Harvey of CSU who is eighth in the long jump this season, as well as her teammate Aumni Ashby who is 11th in the triple.
Â
On the men's side of the jumps, William Nolan has the 11th-best mark in the nation in the triple at 15.15m (49-8½), while boasting the fourth-best mark in the long jump at 7.41m (24-3¾). The sophomore could post some big marks and should take down the facility long jump record of 7.20m.
Â
Finally the women's shot put should be a good event with the ninth and 11th-best throwers in the country this season in Maria Muzzio and Tarynn Sieg of Colorado State. Both have throws of 15.50m (50-10ÂĽ) or better, and CU's Mariah Walker has a personal best of 15.71m (51-7) and could get into the mix with a throw close to that. Â
Â
Fans are encouraged to come for both days, with Friday free to the public and Saturday with an $8 entrance fee. All fans should enter through the Buffs Ticketing and Team Store lobby doors. CU Athletics Clear Bag Policy will be in effect as well as a water-only rule in the Indoor Practice Facility.
Â
On Saturday, free parking is available in lot 169, the dirt lot north of the stadium; there is a paved pathway to the Indoor Practice Facility. The lot/structure at Colorado and Regent, "RG" Â is also free to park on Saturday.
Parking is also available in the Folsom Garage, underneath the Indoor Practice Facility. The hourly rate is $2.00, best paid via the ParkMobile app. The paved lot north (#390) of Champions Center is exclusively for CU Sports Medicine and Performance Center, even on Saturday.
