Colorado Splits to Husky Classic and Tyson Invitational
February 06, 2019 | Track and Field
BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program will be leaving the state of Colorado for just the second time this season when the team travels to the Husky Classic at the University of Washington and the Tyson Invitational at the University of Arkansas.
The two main squads will feature throwers and distance going to the Husky Classic, while the sprinters and hurdlers will go to Tyson. This will be the first taste at a banked track for the Arkansas group, while the main national qualifying attempts in Seattle will come in the 3,000 and 5,000 meter races.
Beginning with the 5,000-meter run, five women and five men will compete in Seattle in the 5,000 with goals to qualify for nationals. Joe Klecker, the national-leader in the 3,000, will be one to watch in the 5,000 as he looks to double-up his qualifying marks. He will be joined by John Dressel, Ethan Gonzales, Alec Hornecker and Paxton Smith in the event. Dressel is sixth in the top-10 in school history in the 5,000 after running 13:42.57 at this meet last year.
On the women's side, Makena Morley will be the one to watch after she ran 15:44.48 at this meet last year to put herself fourth on the top-10 list. She will be joined by Mackenzie Caldwell, Baylee Jones, Lindsey Koch and Tayler Tuttle in the event.
For the 3,000-meter run, Kaitlyn Benner will try to qualify the NCAA Championship once again and will be joined by Holly Bent and Val Constien. Tabor Scholl will also race in the 3,000 for the first time in her career. Gus Newcomb will be the lone Buff on the men's side.
Also competing in the Husky Classic will be Elissa Mann and Karina Mann in the 800 along with Alex Scales on the men's side.
In the throws, Elisa Grandemange, Mariah Walker, Brock Knechtel and Caleb Penner will all compete in the weight throw. Walker will also throw shot.
The Tyson Invitational will be a meet for speed with all competitors running at least one event on the track. The women's hurdler group of Kylie Davis, Eriana Henderson, Dani Johnson and Valerie Welch will all be competing in the hurdles. Johnson and Henderson moved into third and fourth on the CU top-10 lists last weekend when they went sub-8.40. Henderson and Welch will also be competing in the long jump.
Gabby Scott is coming off of her school record performance of 53.56 in the women's 400 and will run that event again. She will then join Henderson, Johnson and Welch as the team that broke the school record in the 4x400 by four seconds last weekend. The quartet will have the luxury of a banked track and better competition to try and break that mark again.
On the men's side, Davion Taylor is scheduled to make his track season debut as the lone Buffalo in the men's 60-dash. The rest of the team will focus on the 200 and 400-meter dash races with Jon Maas, Duane McClurkin Jr., Aaron McCoy and Kendal Smith all running in the 400. Those four will also come together in the 4x400 meter relay, but not before Maas and McClurkin Jr. run in the 200 Saturday afternoon.
Both meets can be watch online with a FloTrack subscription for the Husky Classic and an SEC Network Plus subscription for the Tyson Invitational.
Colorado will also send a small group to compete in Colorado Springs at UC-Colorado Springs new track facility.
