Colorado Takes on CSU Saturday
March 13, 2019 | Tennis
BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team concludes non-conference play against rivals Colorado State Saturday in Fort Collins. The match will either be played at 2 p.m. if it is outside or 4 p.m. inside depending on weather.
Â
Colorado (7-7, 1-1 Pac-12) is coming off an important weekend highlighted by the upset of then-ranked No.28 Washington State. The Buffs also picked up a point in a 4-1 loss to No.7 Washington that helped kickstart the confident play displayed Sunday in the upset of the Cougars.
Â
The Buffaloes were led last weekend by the strong play of rising star Sara Nayar. The freshman played a pair of ranked opponents and was key to the victory against Washington State by upsetting their No.1 singles player ranked in the top-40 in the nation. Nayar is now 9-5 in dual singles matches and has a team-high seven wins in doubles matches, all in the No.2 doubles spot.
Â
Another key to the success was senior Annabelle Andrinopoulos who picked up her first Pac-12 win in more than a year in the No.2 singles spot against WSU. Andrinopoulos, who sat out last year because of injury, has been plagued early in the season with injury but showed no signs of it Sunday with a close unfinished No.1 doubles match against a top-40 duo and the singles win.
Â
Also for Colorado, Monica Malinen continues to be a reliable asset with a team-high 11 dual singles wins this season. She has moved into the No.3 singles role recently, aiding in the team's .786 win percentage in those matches. Between Malinen, Nayar and Megan Forster, the Buffs are 11-3 in No.3 singles matches this dual season.
Â
The Rams this season are 7-4 with a Mountain West loss to UNLV as their only conference play. They were on a three-dual win streak when UNC Greensboro snapped it last Thursday in a 4-3 win. Prior to the loss, CSU had a 7-0 road win against North Dakota, then returned home to sweep Drake 7-0 and take down UTEP 5-2.
Â
Following the match in Fort Collins, CU travels to head coach Danielle Steinberg's alma mater Arizona for her first Pac-12 dual against her former team. Colorado will also take on ASU in the trip then return home to close out the month of March against Oregon on March 29 at 1:30 p.m.
