Colorado Continues Road Trip Against New Mexico

February 07, 2025 | Tennis

BOULDER – The Colorado Buffaloes tennis team will look to bounce back as they continue their road trip Saturday against New Mexico.

After dropping a heartbreaker last weekend against Illinois, Colorado (4-1) will look to get another in the win column against New Mexico (2-3) on Saturday. The Lobos are coming in after losing a tough match last week to Gonzaga 4-3.

"New Mexico is a solid squad who had a strong season last year," head coach Anthony Pham said. "Our team is excited to get back on the road and compete again."
The Buffs are entering with a 20-match regular season win streak against non-Power Five opponents dating back to 2023. It won't be easy to continue against the Lobos, who are coming off a season in which they went 19-3 and returned five players from that team.

The Buffs will look to lean on senior, Betina Tokac to bounce back this weekend. Tokac is the only player to score a point in all five matches going 5-0 in singles. She has played in different spots, playing the first three at No. 3 singles, followed by her first appearance at the top spot against IUPUI last week. She dominated winning 6-2,6-2.

Her toughest match of the season came the following day when the Buffs took on Illinois. Tokac dropped back to the No. 4 spot and after starting slow, she took over, winning the second and third sets 6-0, 6-4 to try and keep the comeback alive.
Over her four-year career, Tokac has played at every spot except No. 2 singles and has a winning record everywhere. She will look to continue that trend against the Lobos.

The two teams' history goes back to 1976, with the Buffs leading the series 20-18 and winning the previous three matches. Nex Mexico has won two of the last three in Albuquerque.

Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson moved up one spot to the No. 20 doubles pairing in the country. That is the highest a doubles team has been ranked during the season in Colorado history.

Action will begin on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 10:30 a.m. beginning with doubles and singles to follow.
