SKIERS STAND SECOND IN OWN INVITE
February 20, 2004 | Skiing
ELDORAÂ -Â With 10 inches of new snow and clear skies as a backdrop, Tor Erik Schjellerud claimed the 10-kilometer classic for the host school as the University of Colorado posted seven top-10 finishes as the Buffaloes stood in second place after the first day of their own 12th annual CU/Laura Sharpe Flood Memorial Invitational here Friday at Eldora Mountain Resort.
Â
Denver leads the field as just 19 points separates the top three teams. With 286 points, the Pioneers have a 16- point edge on the Buffs (270), who hold a three-point advantage on New Mexico (267). Nevada (218) and Utah (216) are battling it out for fourth going into Saturday's final four events.Â
Â
"Cross country obviously took full advantage of their home turf," said head coach Richard Rokos. "The way they presented themselves today was outstanding. They reinforced their seed position for NCAA's and can go into tomorrow's race relaxed. Our women's downhill team did a great job with a couple of good runs here. Our guys tried their best, but starting back in this field is extremely difficult because of last night's new snow which I hope freezes overnight and is harder tomorrow."
Â
Schjellerud's win was the first for the January transfer who had a pair of runner-up, a third and fourth place finish entering today's home meet. He covered the 10k course in 26 minutes 4.6 seconds to finish a comfortable 30 seconds ahead of New Mexico's Geir-Endre Rogn (26:34.4) and Utah's Henning Dybendal (26:37.3).Â
Â
While Erling Christiansen was sidelined due to illness, Henrik Hoye tied a season best fourth place finish in the event in 26:45.3. Men's nordic team captain Nick Sterling (28:40.7) also finished a season best 13th and in scoring position for the second time this season.  Freshman Tim Damrow (29:55.7) rounded out CU's efforts this morning.
Â
Jana Rehemaa's runner-up finish in the women's 5k version in 15:24.7 was her fourth of the season as her quest for her first collegiate win will have to wait another day. The sophomore trailed New Mexico's Martina Stursvoa who won in 14:52.3 and at 3-0, remains undefeated in the discipline in '04. Muriele Huberli and Claire Critchley finished in a 5th/6th punch respectively with just 1.3 seconds separating the two. Huberli's season best classical finish was done so in 15:37.4, followed by Critchley's third top-10 finish in 15:38.7. Brooke Rygg's 17:08.1 23rd place finish was a meet best for the sophomore.
Â
In the men's and women's giant slalom, the Buffs' combined for a seven top-20 finishes, led by Erika Hogan's sixth place effort in 2:07.11, matching her finish a year ago in this meet. Women's alpine captain Erin McEachren's 2:07.52 ninth place finish was a four-place improvement over her first run standing and was her strongest in the discipline this season as she continues to strengthen her case for the NCAA Championships roster. Eighth after her 1:03.65 first run, Kristin Taylor's 1:04.44 second brought her to a respectable 13th place final finish. Five-time All-American Mia Cullman finished a disappointing 17th, out of scoring position for only the fourth time in her four year career and two spots ahead of Julie Czesnowski (2:09.43). After being disqualified in the first run in this race a year ago, Sarah Fisher made the Buffs' biggest first to second run improvement as the sophomore was 47th after the first run and improved 17 places to finish 30th in 2:15.05.
Â
The men's downhill team had to overcome unfavorable starting positions on an already soft course, but was still able to put together respectable finishes. Tahir Bisic continues to pace the men's downhill team as the junior was in 18th overall after his first run and finished a team best 14th among collegiate skiers in a two-run time of 2:01. Still fighting for a spot on the NCAA roster, Fritz Ernemann and Cody Jenick finished 20th and 21st respectively in the GS. Making the "flip" after the morning's first run, Ernemann had the true first run of the afternoon when Denver's Aaron Bolduc DNF'd his second run and he finished 20th in 2:03.03. Jenick put together a two-run day of 2:03.78 to finish 21st. Brad Hogan, who is redshirting the 2004 season, finished seventh in the overall standings (1:59.99) and alum Tyler Shepherd 20th (2:01.89).
Â
The meet concludes Saturday with the slalom beginning at 8:15 a.m., followed by the nordic team's freestyle at 9:30.

COLORADO SKIER POST-RACE QUOTES
Â
Bruce Cranmer, Nordic Coordinator
On Racing At Home: "We'll, it's great not having to travel and being on your home course is always kind of nice. You know what it's like to go hard here, you know where the traffic is. We're a little sick, so we're not as healthy as we'd like to be, but it's nice being close to home and having good conditions."
On Jana Rehemaa: "I think Jana had a decent race, she's one that has had a cold, so she was borderline today. But Muri and Claire were solid."
On Tor Erik Schjellerud: "His was our first win in cross country, and it's a good victory because it's on our home course. He's getting better and better. He's on track and I think he'll do really well in regionals."
General: "It was a tough course, pretty difficult. It was hard because of the high altitude, and being all uphill at the end, you don't get any rest. We're lucky because it was a nice day and it made the race more enjoyable. It seems like it's always snowing or bad weather."
On Skiing At Home: "It's nice because we know how to ski the course, and we know the course really well. We know when to rest and when to push ourselves. It was a good preparation for (NCAA) regionals because Crested Butte has a similar course."
On Her Race: "I didn't have a very good race today. I was tired and have been sick and it makes it harder on my body. As a team we did very well though."
Jana Rehemaa
General: "It was hard, but it was really nice weather today. But the race was hard because of the elevation. I was all right, but I've been a little sick this week, so that's why I was satisfied (with my performance)."
Tor Erik Schjellerud
General: "It's hard to ski at this altitude, but we had a good feeling. It was hard from 1.5 to 3 kilometers, but it's always nice to have home races because you know where to push it and where to take it easy. Today was my day and next week we don't know."
Henrik Hoye
General: "It was a good race. I was kind of tired after the first lap because the course is a tough one. You have to be strong because the race is hard to recover from. There were good conditions with the snow last night. It may the setting in the tracks easier to ski on. I'm satisfied with the season. The field is strong and the competition, tough. I've had a descent season and have gotten better with everything that I've done."
Â
Erika Hogan
General: "I was able to make up some time on the second run b/c it was straighter and faster and there were bigger holes"
Erin McEachren
General: "The second run was straight and a good set. You were able to get some good lines. We really want to win this meet, so we've definitely got some confidence going into tomorrow. And tomorrow is our event, so we're pretty motivated."
