TRACK TO HOST POTTS INVITE SATURDAY
March 17, 2005 | Track and Field
BOULDER - With the indoor track and field season results barely in the books, the University of Colorado will kick off the outdoor campaign Saturday, March 19 when the Buffs host the annual Potts Invitational at Potts Field on east campus. The field events will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the running events at 1:30.
Should inclement weather force a cancellation of the meet, such notice will be posted on www.CUBuffs.com as well as a message left on the track and field office voice mail at 303/492-5227.
The non-team scoring meet will have a different look than in recent years. Joining Colorado with full squads will be Northern Colorado, South Dakota School of Mines and Regis while Oklahoma State, Western State, Air Force and Colorado State will be sending unattached athletes.
Hoping to make as much noise outdoors as they did in, Buff throwers and indoor weight throw school record holders Zach Hazen and Cortney Hutmacher will be joined by teammates James Begley, Andy Passen, Bethany Harrison, Carly Newlands and Hannah Warfield-Ruffato. Senior Chase Mullen, in his final season of eligibility, will sit out the opener due to injury.
Jackie Sturm, Sam Napp, George Pincock, Abe Freisen and Eric Lee-O'brien are entered in both the sprint distances as well as relays which will also feature Nate Terry, Derek Winton, Anthony Chiulli and Mark Ebert on the men's side and Jackie Zeigle, Marissa Carhardt and Kelly Shuma on the women's.
The jumps will feature football transplant Hugh Charles, a provisional qualifier in the long jump during the indoor season, Michael Messimer, Amberly Casey and Liza Negriff, the outdoor school record holder in the triple jump (40-6.25).
Doubling on Saturday will be middle distance runners Daniel Kenney, Kelly Shuma, Jackie Zeigle and Marissa Carhart while Anthony Chiulli, Nate Terry, Derek Winton and Mark Ebert will all run the men's 800-m as well as support two relay teams each. Shuma, Zeigle and Carhart will all run the women's 800-m and 4x400-m relay.
Colorado's distance contingent will feature Kristen Hoogheem, Erin Marston, Laura Zeigle, Kendall Grgas-Wheeler and Micah Mosley entered in their respective 1,500-m races while Will Campbell and Pete Janson will run the steeplechase and Natalie Florence, Kalin Toedebusch, Austin Baillie, Payton Batliner, Greg Castro and Jon Severy in the 3k. Florence is the 2003 NCAA Regional steeplechase champion.
While their teammates are on the blacktop, senior Renee Metivier and freshman Liza Pasciuto will be in France running in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships.
