Vaughn Takes Big 12 10k Crown
May 12, 2006 | Track and Field
Vaughn finished the race in 30 minutes and 28.17 seconds. He led the entire way and had a commanding lead for most of the race. Vaughn became the first CU harrier to win the 10k since Chuck Trujillo won in 1986 with a time of 31:14.63.
“We expected him to get 10 points,” head coach Mark Wetmore said. “I'm glad he did. Even though it doesn't feel like a hot night, he definitely has some heat problems, as does Seth (DeMoor) and Christine (Bolf). This is not the best Big 12 10k conditions I have seen ever, but none the less, it was just more than we could handle. And I'm worried about his health right now more than I am excited about his win.”
Chris Pannone added six points for CU with a third-place finish in his first 10k Big 12 race, despite running in second for the majority of the race. He finished with a time of 30:38.17. Erik Heinonen was also at the head of the pack for the first half of the race, but dropped down to finish ninth (31:16.05). Seth DeMoor came in 16th with a mark of 31:54.32. He was as high as sixth during the race, but dropped 10 positions in the last three laps.
“He (Chris) did an awful lot of leading of that second pack,” Wetmore said. “I didn't really expect Chris and Erik to have to pull the race for as long as they did. But it wasn't overly fast and I am happy with how he (Chris) did.”
In the women's 10k, Christine Bolf took third overall. She recorded a mark of 34:47.29. With the time, she bettered the stadium record of 34:48.49, set in 1999. Mary Davies of
“It's a disappointing race for her,” Wetmore said. “Those are people that she should be able to run with, definitely second place and she just looked like a person having heat problems, even though it's the best conditions we've seen in years here (
“I wanted to win, but I don't think I had a really good race today,” Bolf said. “It was kind of hot and I'm not really used to the heat. I have the 5k on Sunday. I won indoors, so hopefully I will repeat outdoors as well.”
In the field, Cortney Hutmacher took 10th in the women's hammer with a throw of 158-11. James Begley took 13th in the men's hammer with a distance of 159-04. Andy Passen took 15th with a toss of 156-03 and Ryan Willis finished 16th with a mark of 156-02.
The Buffs will continue action on tomorrow, Saturday, May 13 at the Big 12 Championships.
