May 26, 2006 | Track and Field

AUSTIN, Texas ? Liza Pasciuto and Brent Vaughn each took third place in the 5,000 meter run here on Friday at the NCAA Midwest Region Championship at the Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.

The warm conditions in Austin caused slower times for the distance runners. Pasciuto clocked in at 16 minutes and 56.61 seconds. The winning mark of 16:43.88 was set by Desiraye Osburn of Wichita State. Vaughn recorded a time of 14:21.49 behind Shadrack Songok of Texas A&M Corpus Christi, who notched a time of 14:19.78. Chris Pannone also ran in the 5k and finished in 15:21.71.

Stephen Pifer and Anthony Chiulli both qualified for the finals on Saturday in the men's 1,500 meters. Pifer took third overall with a mark of 3:46.99 and Chiulli finished in 3:47.66. The men's 4x100-m relay of Sam Napp, Ryan Campbell, Chris Abuan and George Pincock, took 12th with a time of 40.45, which is the second best time this season and the third best in school history. The best time this season was 40.30, set at the Sun Angel Classic on April 15 and the CU record is 39.5, set back in 1971.

Rounding out the track events, George Pincock finished 15th in the 200 with a time of 21.24. Chris Abuan took 17th in the 400 with a mark of 47.63.
