Dodson Sets School Record At Air Force
February 14, 2009 | Track and Field
AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. ? Senior Jeremy Dodson ran a time of 20.88 seconds as he set the University of Colorado indoor 200-meter dash record at the Air Force Invitational on Saturday.
Dodson became the first Buff to run the indoor 200 in less than 21 seconds. The previous record was 21.02, which was set by teammate Ryan Campbell in 2007.
“I don't care about what record was broke or what place I ran,” Dodson said. “All that I'm glad about is that I finally put together a half decent race. I thank God for holding every single part of my body together for at least 21 seconds.”
The time is the fourth fastest time recorded by a collegiate sprinter this season and is the top mark in the Big 12 Conference. Dodson ranked eighth in the country heading into this weekend with a former personal record of 21.07. Although the time is only an NCAA provisional mark, it should be fast enough to earn Dodson a berth to the NCAA Indoor Championship March 13-14 in College Station, Texas.
Dodson also owns the CU outdoor 200-meter dash record at 20.37. He set that time at the 2008 Big 12 Championships last May in Boulder.
Not just a 200-meter ace, Dodson also won the 60-meter dash. He did so with another NCAA provisional mark of 6.72 which is the fastest time of the year for Colorado. Dodson's younger brother, A.J. Whitaker, took fifth in the finals (6.94) after placing third in the prelims (6.86).
Sophomore Ryan Miller, an offensive tackle on the CU football team, made his debut as a member of the track and field team by leading the Buffs in the shot put with a toss of 46 feet, 7.25 inches. The throw is the longest by a Buff this season and is the second farthest throw over the last two years for CU. Miller placed 16th overall.
Freshman Brianne Beemer led the Buffs on the women's side as she took second in the 800-meter run. She finished in 2:17.09. Beemer was the top collegiate finisher.
Cassie Hirschfeld led CU in the sprints. She took fifth overall in the 60-meters (7.76) after placing seventh in the prelims (7.85). She was also seventh in the 200 with a personal record of 25.44.
Dyamond Seay also scored in a pair of events for Colorado. She was seventh in the 400 (57.17) and eighth in the 200 (25.73).
In the field events, the Buffs recorded points from Alyssa Frank. She was eighth overall in the high jump with a mark of 5-03.00. CU's combined events/jumps coach Lindsey Malone won the high jump at 5-08.75.
There were intermittent power outages at the U.S. Air Force Academy in the morning and action was suspended for three hours, but the Buffs and the other teams were able to continue competition after the hiatus. Colorado's men tied for eighth (out of 14 teams) and the women also took eighth (out of 16 teams).
The Buffs will have one more tune up prior to the Big 12 Championship on Feb. 27-28. The final meet before conference is the Colorado School of Mines Twilight Open on Friday, Feb. 20.
