Buffs Shine At Jerry Quiller Classic
March 21, 2015 | Track and Field
BOULDER – The conditions were perfect at Potts Field on Saturday as the University of Colorado kicked off the outdoor season with several great performances.
“There were a lot of good performances today, particularly in the sprints group,” head coach Mark Wetmore said. “Maybe it's because finally after three weeks of terrible winter they were down to tights and sunny weather.”
All four of CU's relay teams won their events, while several individuals took away top honors. The women's 4x100 relay (Mia Holland, Tashay Brown, Ana Holland and Eileen Gehring) won in 45.80 seconds, easily defeating the runner-up, Colorado Christian (55.79). Ana Holland, Brown and Gehring teamed up with Lindsy Mattson for the 4x400, and that quartet clocked in at 3:47.57 for first.
On the men's side, Jaylyn Mars, Austin Mitsch, Erik Gaytan and Shaw Gifford raced to a time of 40.88 to win the 4x100; Gaytan and Gifford joined Darrin Haynes and Garret Losty in the 4x400 and finished first in 3:13.85.
Individually, the Buffs won both the men's and women's 200 and 400-meter dashes. Ana Holland clocked in the fifth fastest time by a Buff in the 200, winning in 23.99. Right behind her in second was teammate Tashay Brown (24.54). On the men's side, Austin Mitsch raced to a finish of 21.26, crossing the finish first in front of Jake Spuller (Air Force), who recorded a time of 21.37.
Mattson was the top finisher in the women's 400, clocking in at 55.12. Gehring, the CU record holder in the event, placed second in 55.43. Yet another Buff sprinter, Mars placed first in the men's 400 with a time of 47.77. Gaytan was right on his heels, placing second in 48.55.
“Ana had a nice 200, I was very happy with that,” Wetmore said. “I was also happy with Austin in the 200. Jaylyn Mars had a really nice time in the 400. A few weeks ago he was running 49s indoors and he came out and ran 47.09 today. The men's relay also looked really good and the 4x100's looked decent for this time of the year.
“Eileen Gehring is back and ran a nice leg on the 4x100 and finished second in the 4x400 in a decent time after having not run that distance since 10 months ago. So, we'll need her to do the things that we want to do in the relays at the conference level and maybe beyond.”
Jaron Thomas had a tough start to the day, falling in the 110-meter hurdles, but he rallied back a couple hours later and placed second in the 400-hurdles in 53.84.
“He had a really hard fall,” Wetmore said. “He fell all the way. People said he fell so hard that he looked like a scorpion. He was really bruised and scraped up. If it was me I wouldn't have been able to come back and run the 400-hurdles. So, his 400 time wasn't brilliant but after the crash he had earlier in the day and the deflation of that, that was a decent and gutsy race.”
The good fortune wasn't just for the sprinters as several other event areas had excellent performances as well. Kaitlyn Benner, who will be racing at the IAAF World Junior Cross Country Championships on March 28, won the women's 3,000 in 9:48.74, over 20 seconds in front of Maor Tiyouri (Boulder Track Club) who was second in 10:10.92.
“That's a good run for her [Kaitlyn Benner],” Wetmore said. “It bodes well for next week in China.”
Val Constien, who will join Benner at the world championships, was third in 10:17.30. Paul Miller, another Buff who will compete at the world championships next week, placed second in the men's 3k race, finishing in 8:39.26.
The 1,500 was another event with a great showing by CU. Sara Sutherland made her CU track debut, finishing second overall in 4:30.07. Maddie Alm was third overall (4:33.28), Erin Clark placed fifth (4:34.67) and Annie Kelly took sixth (4:39.22).
“Sara Sutherland ran her first outdoor race for us, finished second in the 1500,” Wetmore said. “4:30 out here will equate when the NCAA is finished with it by Monday to 4:25 or so. That'll be a regional qualifier and most importantly, she looked good, she looked aggressive. It's been a project because she had knee surgery 10 months ago but I was very happy with her today. I think she's going to help us a lot by the end of the season.”
The field events also shined for the Buffs this weekend with the throwers competing on Friday and Saturday. Alex Kizirian set a pair of personal bests in the hammer throw and shot put. He was second in the hammer throw (202-2) and shot put (55-7.75). His mark in the hammer throw was less than nine feet short of the school record (210-11).
“Yesterday Alex got a mark that will certainly get him through [to NCAA Prelims],” Wetmore said.
Mariah Walker won the women's shot put with a toss of 46-1.50 and was also fifth in the discus (140-1).
“Mariah is a big talent,” Wetmore said. “Casey [Malone] is a methodical and patient coach. He will clean up the little technical things that can add up to a lot. In a couple of years she's going to be very good.”
CU's final first-place finisher was Mark Jones, who tied for first in the high jump at 6-11.
CU will compete next weekend in Fort Collins, Colo. at the Fum McGraw Quadrangular on March 28.
