Wojcik And Beck Earn Wins In 4-2 Loss At Cal
March 16, 2018 | Tennis
BERKELEY, Calif. – California held off a strong effort from Colorado in women's tennis on Friday, topping the Buffs 4-2 at the Hellman Tennis Complex. CU dropped to 8-5 overall and 1-2 in the Pac-12, while the Golden Bears improved to 6-5 and 2-1.
Due to impending inclement weather, the teams agreed to play singles first in hopes of completing an official match before the weather moved in. Doubles matches were not started following Cal's clinch through singles play.
SINGLES: The Buffs got off to a strong start, leading 1-0 after Kyra Wojcik won her No. 5 singles match 6-3, 6-1 in just 69 minutes. Trailing 2-1 in the first set, she broke Hana Mraz as she took four straight games to go up 5-2. Wojcik then dropped the first game of the second set before breezing through the next six games to sweep Mraz.
Cal took the second completed match as 32nd-ranked Olivia Hauger topped Chloe Hule 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Hauger jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set to cruise to her victory.
The Bears then earned a victory at No. 1 singles with 35th-ranked Anna Bright defeating CU's 113th-ranked Linda Huang 6-4, 6-1. Huang battled tough in the first set. Trailing 3-1, she took three of the next four games to even the set at 4-4 before conceding the final two games. Bright took control early in the second set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead before Huang got on the scoreboard.
The Bears stretched their lead to 3-1 after the No. 3 singles match completed as Maria Smith defeated Jeannez Daniel 6-2, 6-3. The two were even early in both sets. Both players won an early break in the first to even the score at 2-2 before Smith pulled away. In the second set, Daniel jumped out 2-0 and went up a break before Smith won three straight games, including two breaks, to pull away.
Cal clinched the match at No. 4 singles as Vivian Glozman earned a tight 7-5, 7-5 win over Louise Ronaldson. The two went back-and-forth throughout the match. Ronaldson held a 5-4 lead in the first with a chance to serve for the set before Glozman won three straight games. Ronaldson was the one fighting back in the second set, trailing 3-0 and 5-2 at different points. She served to pull within 5-3, then broke Glozman and held serve to tie the set 5-5 before the Cal player pulled out the final two games.
Brigitte Beck and Jasie Dunk were locked in a marathon at No. 6 singles. Dunk rallied from down 5-3 to take the first set 7-5. In the second set, Beck battled back from down a break to win 6-4, winning three out of four deuce points in the set. Each player went up a break early in the third set with Beck taking a 2-0 lead before Dunk won three straight games. Beck then fought back, winning four of the final five sets, including three breaks.
NOTES: Beck earned her first Pac-12 singles victory of the season and the third of her career (she is also 2-0 in doubles Pac-12 matches this season) ... Beck's singles win was her first since Feb. 10 vs. Jenna Dorian (Sacramento State), snapping a seven-match losing streak ... Wojcik is now 3-0 in Pac-12 play this season and has seven career victories in conference play ... Huang has run into tough competition at No. 1 singles as she is now 1-5 vs. nationally-ranked opponents, but 18-3 vs. non-ranked opponents ... Hule has dropped consecutive matches after winning four straight March 3-11 ... Ronaldson had her three-match winning streak snapped.
UP NEXT: CU takes on No. 25 Stanford at 1 p.m. MT on Saturday at Taube Family Tennis Center on Stanford's campus.

On the adversity of playing singles before doubles when doubles have been the team's strength
"It was a decision made prior to the match just because of the forecast. It's a little different. It's the first time that several of them have done that in their college career that we've played singles first. But overall, we handled it well. It's tough because in a lot of our matches today, we were in control of points and games, but we weren't able to close. With us having a match out here tomorrow, I look for us to capitalize more when we have those opportunities. Knowing that we hadn't hit in the last two days between having a day off on Wednesday, and yesterday not hitting because of the weather, we came out here and competed hard. That's the first element that you need. Our execution wasn't quite where we wanted it. We'll definitely look for that to improve tomorrow. At the same time, Stanford is no easy opponent. We know that the level of our opponent will also increase and improve so we are looking to improve our execution."
On the play of Kyra Wojcik, Brigitte Beck and Louis Ronaldson
"Kyra played great. I think she came out ready after a tough loss on Tuesday. She wanted revenge, so in some ways, I feel sorry for her opponent today because I felt she really wanted to get back out to the court as soon as possible after Tuesday's loss. I think she played really smart tennis. When a shot was there, she took it. She was patient when she needed to be and she was aggressive when she had the opportunity.
"It was a great win for B. She was 5-3 up in the first set and lost that 7-5. And then to come back, get the second set and to come back again and get the third set, was a real notch in her hat. Just to keep being persistent, keep being resilient and keep competing.
"Lou was down 5-2 in the second set and came back to get it even to 5-all. We definitely were putting ourselves in a position to go to the live doubles point, which you want your team competing and these guys are competing really hard."
