Colorado Competing in Four Meets in California

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program spreads across the west coast this week with four meets in California, the Mt. Sac Relays, Bryan Clay Invitational, Beach Invitational and Cardinal Classic.

The Buffaloes have begun competition this morning at the Bryan Clay Invitational for the first day of the heptathlon and decathlon. The three senior women, Drianna Mustin, Maja Wichhart-Donzo and Michaela Wenning, are all in separate sections of the heptathlon, while freshman Josh Farmer is in the first group of the men's decathlon.

Also competing tonight for Colorado will be the 10,000-meter runners. Paxton Smith and Alec Hornecker compete in the men's first heat tonight at 8:30 p.m. (PT), while Lindsey Koch will run at 9:05 p.m. (PT). They are the only Buffs running the 10k this week.

Thursday will conclude the multi-event athletes for CU, with a similar format that evening with the 5,000 heats in the Bryan Clay Invitational. Joe Klecker will lead a group of Colorado distance runners that are slated to compete in the 5,000 between 7 p.m. (PT) and 10 p.m. Gus Newcomb will begin things for CU, while Klecker will take to the track at 8:20 p.m. (PT) in the first heat. Kaleigh Kroeker, Elizabeth Constien, Baylee Jones and Cayla Seligman will all compete during this time in the snake-draft styled heat format.

Most of the action begins Friday with the sprinters and hurdlers at the Mt. Sac Relays while the distance squad and field event athletes compete in Stanford at the Cardinal Classic. Hurdles are the focus at the Mt. Sac Relays with Kylie Davis, Valerie Welch, Dani Johnson and Eriana Henderson all competing in the 100 hurdles in the morning. All of those women, minus Henderson, will also run in the 400 hurdles alongside Aaron McCoy, Nathan Hoy and Kellen Monestime on the men's side. Henderson and Gabby Scott will wait to compete until Saturday in the invite section of the women's 400 hurdles.

Other marks to watch at the Mt. Sac Relays include Jon Maas and Kendal Smith in the open 400 and Maas and Duane McClurkin Jr. in the 200. McClurkin Jr. will compete in the invite section of the 400 on Saturday, then CU will compete both 4x400-meter relays in the invite section at the Mt. Sac Relays.

Up in Stanford, distance is going to be the focus with numerous athletes entered in the 800, 1,500 and 5,000. Friday action on the track will begin with the 800 where both Elissa and Karina Mann will compete for the women and Josh Ramos and Jonathan Horton on the men's side. As the sun goes down the 5,000s will begin where Kaitlyn Benner and Holly Bent will represent for the women and John Dressel will lead a group of CU men that includes Ryan Forsyth, Eduardo Herrera and Ethan Gonzales.

Saturday marks the beginning of the season for Val Constien in the women's steeplechase, and that evening the women will send a quartet into the 1,500. Makena Morley, Tabor Scholl, Karina Mann and Olivia Brooks all begin competition at 6:16 p.m. (PT) with a descending order that ends with the invite section at 7:02 p.m. to conclude the Cardinal Classic.
