Scott Downs Another School Record

April 27, 2019 | Track and Field

Jones top-10 in nation in debut

FORT COLLINS – The University of Colorado track and field program had a stellar day at the Jack Christiansen Invitational Saturday at Colorado State University.

The story of the day came when senior Gabby Scott destroyed the school record in the women's 400-meter dash by nearly a full second. Scott, the indoor record holder, won the women's 400 with a time of 52.34 seconds to break Eileen Gehring's record of 53.23 back in 2013. Scott now owns the school record in both the indoor and outdoor 400, the 400 hurdles and the indoor 4x400-meter relay.

With her time Scott is now 15th in the nation in the open 400. Altitude conversion adds time, putting her at 52.45 at the national lists.

Another standout performance came in Dani Jones debut this outdoor season. The redshirt junior ran 4:20.57 to win the women's 1,500 by nearly nine seconds. Her time gets converted down to 4:14.68 which is good for ninth in the nation.

Jones was not alone in the race as the Buffs swept the first three spots in the 1,500 and had five in the top-10. Karina Mann ran 4:29.10 for second, while freshman Annie Hill rounded out the three with a 4:30.30. Olivia Brooks and Holly Bent placed seventh and eighth in the race with times of 4:36.32 and 4:39.26, respectfully.

The Colorado women had three other huge marks on the day. The first came with Valerie Welch broke the 60-second barrier for the first time in the 400 hurdles with a time of 59.89. She was second in the race behind Scott who won in a time of 58.89. Dani Johnson was third in the race with a time of 1:02.62.

The second huge mark came from Elisa Grandemange as she won the women's javelin. Grandemange threw a three-meter personal best of 45.70m (149-1), most than 10-feet farther than her best throw before. She also was third in the hammer throw with a throw of 57.18 meters.

The final set of huge marks came from Cheyenne Cheshier in the long jump and triple jump. Cheshier jumped a new personal best of 5.44m (17-10.25) for fifth in the long jump, as well as won the triple jump with a mark of 11.84m (38-10.25). She was just an inch and a half from her personal best.

On the men's side, Kendal Smith had a huge day with a pair of personal best performances in the 200 and 400 meter dashes. He dropped nearly a second in the 200 with his first sub-22 performance at 21.89 seconds. He also broke the 48-second barrier in the 400 for the first time with a 47.64 second performance for second.

Jon Maas also had a good day, winning the 400 in a time of 47.16. Gabe Fendel took the title in the 800 in 1:52.00, and Eduardo Herrera won the 1,500 with a time of 3:52.12. CU ended up with four individual wins on the track with Aaron McCoy winning the 400 hurdles in a time of 51.32 seconds. McCoy and Maas joined up with Nathan Hoy and Monestime to also win the 4x400.

Colorado will conclude regular season competition next week with the team heading to Air Force while the combined event athletes go to the Pac-12 Multi Championships.
