Dodson Sets School Record At Air Force

Dodson Advances To Finals In Two Events

February 27, 2009 | Track and Field

COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? University of Colorado senior Jeremy Dodson continued to shine for the Buffs as he led CU on the first day of the 2009 Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championship at Gilliam Track & Field Stadium at the McFerrin Athletic Center on Friday.

Dodson advanced to the finals in both the 60 and the 200-meter dashes. Dodson won his heat of the 200 in 21.15 seconds. He was fourth overall in the 60; coming in at 6.84. Dodson owns the fastest time in the league in the 200 (20.88) and ranks sixth in the league in the 60.

Ryan Campbell also qualified for the finals in the 200. He ran a mark of 21.36.

“On paper, you would expect that [Dodson would advance], but in this conference it is still a pleasant surprise,” head coach Mark Wetmore said. “Ryan is through as well and on the form chart, that wouldn't have been. Those guys had a good day and are through to tomorrow and let's hope they are feeling well and can do that again.”

Laura Thweatt earned her first All-Big 12 track honor by placing eighth in the women's 5,000-meter run. She completed the 25 lap race in 16:59.39. Thweatt started in the back of the 22-person pack for the first 2,000-meters and moved up to 13th by the midway point. Thweatt held strong to secure a team point for the Buffs.

“If Laura has run 50 miles in the last month, I would be surprised,” Wetmore said. “That is a pretty good race for someone who is just getting back into shaping and patching herself back together.”

Kenyon Neuman placed eighth overall in the 5,000-meter run. He finished in 14:21.15 after running in second place for the first half of the race. Neuman fell to fourth with about 2k left but was unable to hang on as others started to kick past him.

Jordan Kyle placed 11th. His time was 14:29.56. Kyle struggled a bit with positioning for the first few laps, but eventually got up to the lead pack where he would finish the second part of the race. Andy Wacker was 14th overall (14:43.56).

“That (the 5k) is my event area and my responsibly,” Wetmore said. “This was a pretty major disappointment for us.”

This was the first time since 2003 that a CU male did not capture the 5k crown. Oklahoma State's John Kosgei won in 14:10.18.

In the women's pentathlon, Brianne Beemer finished 12th overall with 3,178 points and Katie Dreher was 13th (3,023). Beemer's strongest event this season has been the 800-meter run and today was no different. She recorded a personal best by clocking a time of 2:15.39, which is also the fastest by a Buffalo in the combined event record book.

Alex Von Hagen leads CU in the heptathlon after the first four events. He has accumulated 2,693 points and is sitting in 14th place overall. Teammate Adam Salzmann is 16th with 2,622 points. Von Hagen and Salzmann had their best performance of the day come in the high jump. Von Hagen tied for eighth (6-03.25) and Salzmann tied for 11th (6-02.00).

The Buffs should expect some great performances tomorrow with Dodson and Campbell in the sprints' finals and Jenny Barringer hitting the track. Wetmore believes that there are “some great things to be excited about tomorrow.”

The second and final day of the championship is Saturday. The day will start at 3 p.m. with the men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles, women's shot put and men's and women's high jump.
