Williams Moves Up in CU Record Books

April 25, 2009 | Track and Field

FORT COLLINS, Colo. ? University of Colorado junior Brandin Williams recorded the seventh best javelin throw in CU history as he took top honors in the event with a 213 foot, two inch throw at the Jack Christiansen Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Williams improved on his regional mark and set a new personal record, topping his old PR by two feet, 10 inches.

CU took the top two spots in the men's javelin throw as senior Kevin Waldron finished behind Williams with a 173-08 throw.

Aside from Williams' victory, the Buffs came out on top in three other events: women's 200-meter dash, women's 400-meter hurdles, and men's 4x100-meter relay.

Sophomore sprinter Cassie Hirschfeld finished first in the 200-meter dash clocking in at 25.11, just under a quarter of a second faster than teammate Veronica Maul who claimed second place with a time of 25.35.

The only Colorado participant in the women's 400-meter hurdle, sophomore Joi Windham, took first with a time of 1:03.48.  Windham crossed the finish line almost two seconds ahead of second place finisher Kayla Contreras of Northern Colorado (1:05.33).

CU was also victorious in the men's 4x100-meter relay.  The Colorado ?A' team, made up of Quinton Dodson, Matthew McCathran, Adrian Gomez, and A.J. Whitaker, edged Colorado State by 0.24 seconds with a time of 41.56 to claim the title.

Sophomore thrower Chase Dukes was the runner-up in the hammer throw at 187-06, coming in second only to Drew Loftin (unattached).

Fellow sophomore Trey Mullen and junior Kaity Kark each recorded two PRs: in the discus throw and in the hammer throw.

Mullen's mark of 150-02 in the discus throw was good enough to earn him twelfth place and to top his previous record (147-06) by two feet, eight inches.  His 162-07 hammer throw was five inches farther than his previous best and was the ninth best hammer throw at the Invitational.

Kark took third in the discus throw with a 151-06 toss, eclipsing her old record (148-08) by almost three feet.  Her 157-0 hammer throw earned her sixth place.

The Buffaloes will host the Front Range Classic, their third and final home meet, next Saturday May 2.  CU will also be competing in the Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto, California on Saturday.  These meets mark the last competitions for the Buffs before the Big 12 Conference Championships, which kick-off on Friday May 15 in Lubbock, Texas.
