Kizirian Breaks CU Hammer Throw Record
April 25, 2015 | Track and Field
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – University of Colorado senior Alex Kizirian broke his second school record this year, this time breaking the hammer throw record at the Jack Christiansen Invitational.
Kizirian, who broke the indoor weight throw record in January, launched a throw of 212-4 on his first effort of the day to break Zack Hazen's former CU record of 210-11. The mark was almost 10 feet further than Kizirian's former personal best of 202-5 which he recorded on April 10, 2015 at the Colorado Invitational. With the toss, Kizirian also won the event, defeating CSU's Tyler Schultz by nearly nine feet (203-7).
“Alex has been chasing that school record for a long time and it was amazing to see him break it at the same meet Zach Hazen first broke it at back in 2007,” assistant coach Casey Malone said. “Alex has a tremendous amount of positive energy going in the right direction and that leads to breakthroughs like today, a huge personal best. He has worked very hard for this moment and I am happy to see him achieve this next level.”
Bekah Daniel recorded her personal best in the triple jump at the meet, leaping 39-1.25. The jump was good for second overall and placed her fourth on CU's all-time performers list.
In the sprints, Jaron Thomas had a great day with a pair of runner-up finishes. He ran a season best time of 14.40 in the 110-hurdles and clocked in at 52.51 in the 400-hurdles. Jaylyn Mars also came in second in the 400, finishing just of his PR at 47.97. Austin Mitsch also had a nice run in the 100, finishing in 10.63 for third place.
Panos Smyrnios came away with a second place finish in the 800. He crossed the finish with a personal best of 1:54.72.
The women also had a pair of runner-up finishes on the track. Lindsy Mattson was second in the 400, finishing in 54.25, another season best; while Catrina McAlister finished the 1,500 in 4:44.24.
The Buffs have a trio of meets on the schedule for Saturday, May 2. Part of the team will head to the Cowpoke Open (Laramie, Wyo.), Longhorn Invitational (Austin, Texas) and the Payton Jordan Invitational (Stanford, Calif.).
