CU Sends Group to Fum McGraw Open
March 20, 2019 | Track and Field
BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program will send two dozen student-athletes to compete in the Fum McGraw Open this Saturday in Fort Collins.
Â
The Buffs will focus on nearly every event 1,500 meters and shorter, with strong representation in the sprints, hurdles and throws. Last weekend CU won 18 events in the Jerry Quiller Classic.
Â
Numerous Colorado student-athletes will open in events for the first time this season. On the men's side, Josh Farmer will throw the discus and high jump outdoors for the first time in a CU jersey, while Jon Maas and Duane McClurkin Jr. will open the 200 this season after running the 400 last weekend. For the women, Samantha Crosmer will run the 200 after opening in the 400 last weekend, while Kylie Davis and Valerie Welch will add the 400 hurdle to their schedule and compete in both hurdle events. Eriana Henderson will also be in the 100 hurdles after running a sub-60 400 hurdle last weekend, and Mariah Walker will throw the javelin instead of hammer this weekend.
Â
Last weekend saw some good opening marks for athletes, especially the throwers. Caleb Penner hit a personal best in the hammer throw with a toss of 53.72 meters (176-3). He highlights a large throws group with Henry Carlson throwing the discus and javelin, Brock Knechtel in the discus and hammer, Tyler Sconce in the shot, discus and hammer, and combined event athletes Farmer and Wyatt Rhoads throwing the discus with Rhoads also tossing the shot and javelin.
Â
Other entries include Cheyenne Cheshier in both horizontal jumps, Elisa Grandemange in the discus, hammer and javelin, Dani Johnson doubling in both hurdle events, and Drianna Mustin in the 200 and 100 hurdles. Nathan Hoy will open with a 400 this weekend for the men, while Jeremy Cody and Giancarlo Narvarte will high jump. Aaron McCoy will also open the outdoor season in the 400 with Kendal Smith, while Gunner Rigsby will compete in the long jump.
Â
Most of the CU distance squad will take the weekend off with the Stanford Invitational coming next weekend, but Cayla Seligman and Bailey Nock will both represent the Buffs in the women's 1,500.
Â
The outdoor season picks up pace next weekend with the Buffaloes competing in three separate meets, the Texas Relays, Stanford Invitational and Tom Benich Invite in Greeley.
