Colorado Competes in Five Meets This Weekend

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program will compete in five meets this week for four days, including the 2019 Texas Relays and Stanford Invitational.

The Buffs begin Wednesday at the Texas Relays and will compete everyday through Saturday. The team will also head to the Mike Fanelli Track Classic on Thursday and Saturday at San Francisco State University, as well as the Stanford Invite Friday evening. CU will also have individuals compete at the CSU-Pueblo Spank Blasing Invite Thursday in Pueblo and the Tom Benich Invite Saturday in Greeley.

Colorado has begun competition at the Texas Relays with Michaela Wenning and Maja Wichhart-Donzo in the women's heptathlon Wednesday and Thursday morning. CU will also compete in the women's high jump with Kylee Harr and Wenning at the Relays, while Elisa Grandemange will throw the hammer and Mariah Walker will throw the shot put to sum up the field events.

Sprints and hurdles will be a focus at the Texas Relays, but the highlight will come in the final event when the CU women will compete in the women's 4x400-meter relay university invite section. The school record indoor team of Dani Johnson, Gabby Scott, Eriana Henderson and Valerie Welch will all compete in hurdle events but will come together for the final event Saturday at 3:50 p.m. (MT).

Those four hurdle women will split with Welch competing in the 100 hurdles and the others in the 400 hurdles. They are joined by Aaron McCoy and Nathan Hoy in the men's 400 hurdles. Duane McClurkin Jr. and Jon Maas will also compete in the 100-meter dash before McClurkin Jr., Maas, McCoy and Kendal Smith run the 4x400 relay together. The men will have a prelim in the relay as well as the finals.

On the West Coast, the Buffaloes will split into a pair of meets, the Stanford Invite and Mike Fanelli Track Classic hosted by San Francisco State University. Thursday will see the distance squad at the Mike Fanelli Classic with Baylee Jones in the 5,000 for the women and Paxton Smith, Gus Newcomb and Alec Hornecker in the men's 5,000. Gabe Fendel may compete in the 1,500 as well but is hoping to get into the Stanford Invite.

Friday evening the Stanford Invite will be the focus for the distance squad. Madison Boreman, Olivia Brooks, Annie Hill and Karina Mann will all compete in the women's 1,500 to begin things. Fendel hopes to join Eduardo Herrera in the men's 1,500, while Holly Bent, Makena Morley and Tabor Scholl are entered to compete after 8 p.m. (MT) in the women's 5,000. The late night special will be Ethan Gonzales and Ryan Forsyth in the men's 10,000 which is scheduled to begin at 11:57 p.m. (MT) for the second heat.

Also competing locally for Colorado, Caleb Penner and Henry Carlson will throw at the CSU-Pueblo meet Thursday and the Tom Benich Invite at UNC in Greeley Saturday. The duo will both compete in the discus, while Penner will throw the hammer and Carlson will compete in the javelin. Kellen Monestime will also run both hurdle events at the Tom Benich Invite.

After this long spring break weekend the Buffaloes will return home to compete in the Colorado Invitational. Field events begin Friday, April 5, at 3 p.m., with the rest of the meet slated for Saturday.
