Constien Wins Pac-12 Steeplechase Title
May 12, 2019 | Track and Field
TUCSON – Despite a three-and-a-half-hour weather delay, Colorado's Val Constien continued the conference dominance in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with her first conference title at the 2019 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships.
Â
The senior dominated the field on her way to a stadium record of 10:01.19. She led every lap of the race and had a seven-second margin of victory in route to the 11th-straight conference steeplechase title in Colorado history. CU has taken every women's steeplechase title since joining the Pac-12 and haven't missed a title since 2008. The Buffs streak began in 2009 with Jenny (Barringer) Simpson's second title, making it 12 titles in 13 years.
Â
CU continued to pick up huge points that gave the women a four-point lead on the field with 40 points. The men are in fifth with 23 points.
Â
Action didn't end until 2 a.m. (MT) with the completion of the 10,000-meter runs. The men's trio of John Dressel, Ryan Forsyth and Ethan Gonzales all picked up points for the Buffaloes with Dressel taking second, Forsyth third and Gonzales seventh. Dressel finished in a time of 29:13.35, five seconds behind the winner from UCLA. Forsyth was right behind at 29:15.58, while Gonzales closed in 29:34.67.
Â
The women picked up huge points in the 10,000 as well with a second place, third place and sixth place finish. Kaitlyn Benner, the 2019 Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year, finished second in 33:36.38. Makena Morley was third in 33:37.47, while Tabor Scholl finished in 34:03.73.
Â
With the long delay the 800 prelims, 400 hurdle prelims and 200 prelims were all moved to timed finals today. Numerous other field events were not completed and were moved to today's schedule.
