BUFF TRACK OPENS SEASON WITH INVITATIONAL

BOULDER - The University of Colorado Track & Field Team got the 2004 season officially underway here Friday night with the Colorado Invitational.  Athletes from CU, the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Northern Colorado all competed in the non-scoring meet at Balch Fieldhouse.

Field events got the day started, with the Buffaloes taking first in eight of those events.  Andy Miller started his season off right, taking first in the high jump with a leap of 6-8, followed by Brandon Johnson in second place with a jump of 6-6. Anna Magle made it a sweep in the high jump with her 5-6 first place finish.  Blake Vanier won the men's pole vault for CU at 14-6, while freshman Tracy Sawczak took the women's crown at 10-0.

In long jump action, it was Brian Calhoun taking first place with a jump of 22-11.50, with freshman Amberly Casey taking first on the women's side at 18-3.  Liza Negriff won the women's triple at 38-3.50.

Ryan Willis got the Buff throwers fired up with a personal best in the shot put, throwing 51-8.50.  Freshman Cortney Hutmacher was CU's top finisher on the women's side, taking third with 42-05.50. Matt Carr was the top Buff in the weight throw at 56-2.

In track action. senior Deneeka Torrey won both the 60 meter dash and the 60 meter hurdles in times of 7.78 and 8.79, respectively.  On the men's side, it was Andy Miller with his second win of the day, taking the men's 60 hurdles in 8.50. Sam Napp won the men's 200 meters in 22.60.

Freshman George Pincock won his first race as a Buffalo with a time of 50.72 in the 400 meter run.  Classmate Daniel Kenney won the men's mile run in 4:31.30, while Jason Zichterman won the 800 meters in 1:57.59.  The Buffs also swept the 3,000 meter run wins with Stephen Pifer taking the men's race (8:38.67) and Jaclyn Baca winning the women's race (11:26.16).

The Buffs will head to Colorado Springs next weekend for the Air Force Open on Jan. 24 at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
