CU Track and Field Finishes Fourth at Jack Christiansen Invite

Fort Collins, Colo. ? The University of Colorado's men's and women's Track and Field teams both took fourth place at the Jack Christiansen Invitational in Fort Collins this Saturday. The men had a final score of 59 points while the women tallied 76 to finish the day.

 

Senior Carly Newlands had a standout day in the field events, setting personal records in both of her events, as well as taking first place in the shot put. She tossed a 14.58m put to take the event and landed in fourth in the discus with a throw of 45.31m. Junior Courtney Hutmacher finished fifth, just behind Newlands in the discus, with a throw of 43.02m. The women rounded out the field events with another first place finish, coming in the long jump by way of junior, Amberly Casey, and her jump of 5.77m. Casey also competed in the triple jump, finishing in third with a distance of 11.83m.

 

For the men's field events, juniors Andy Passen and James Begley, and senior Ryan Willis took fifth (16.45m), sixth (16.08m) and seventh (15.20m), in that order in the shot put. Begley also threw in the discus and the hammer, taking seventh (48.87m) and eighth (50.15) respectively. For the jumps, freshman Blaine Hoogenboom took fourth in the high jump with a height of 1.95m and sophomore Mark Ebert landed in 15th in the long jump with a distance of 5.85m.

 

Both the men's and women's relay teams had a successful day. The men's 4x400m team of Brandon Johnson, George Pincock, Nate Terry and Chris Abuan continued their dominance in the event with a first place finish while posting another regional qualifying time of 3:08.96. It was their second fastest time of the season, their first coming at the Texas Relays on April 7th. The 4x100m squad of Lionel Lawson, Ryan Cambpell, Samuel Napp and Sam Pincock came in third in their race, posting a time of 41.53. As for the women's relay, Dyamond Seay, Jaclyn Sturm, Veronica Maul and Allison Hawes finished third in the 4x400m race, tallying a year-best time of 3:52.37. 

 

In the men's individual running events, freshman Wil Buchanan ran a personal record setting 800m dash, crossing the tape first with a time of 1:54.45. In the 200m dash, Samuel Napp led the Buffs with a fourth place finish, clocking in at 21.68. He was followed by freshman, Justin Suss (9th, PR22.63), Sam Pincock (14th, 22.91) and freshman Ian Wilson (19th, PR23.33).

 

Junior Chris Abuan took third (PR46.96) in the 400m, followed closely by George Pincock in fifth (PR47.17) and Nate Terry in sixth (PR47.29). Sophomore Ryan Campbell also had a personal record today, finishing third in the 100m dash with a time of 10.62. Close on his heels was fellow Buff, Samuel Napp who finished in fifth with a time of 10.82.

 

By way of the 400m dash, junior Jaclyn Sturm led the way for the women's individual running events, taking third with a personal record time of 58.09. In the 200m dash, freshman Dyamond Seay finish in fourth (25.54) followed by fellow freshman Veronica Maul who placed sixth (26.04).

 

Yet another personal record was taken down today by junior Erin Marston, finishing 10th in the 1,500m race with a time of 4:59.21. The women also competed in the 100m and 400m hurdles and the 3000m steeplechase. Freshman Leslie Maxwell took 10th in the 100m hurdles (14.80), freshman Jessica Brown took 18th in the 400m hurdles (1:15.33) and sophomore Shanna Sparks took fifth in the steeplechase with a time of 12:04.28.

 

The Buffs will be split up once again next weekend between the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Penn. starting on Thursday, the 27 and the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa starting on Friday the 28.
