Barringer Sets CU 3k Record
January 31, 2009 | Track and Field
SEATTLE, Wash.? University of Colorado senior harrier Jenny Barringer set the school record in the 3,000-meter run at the UW Indoor Invitational on Saturday.
Barringer's time of 8 minutes, 53.88 seconds is an automatic qualifying time for the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship March 13-14 in College Station, Texas. This was her first race since finishing ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Olympic Games in August. It is her first indoor race since the 2006 season.
“I felt really good,” Barringer said. “This is what I've been training for over the past few months. It's nice to see that my racing is matching my training and it's very exciting. I have some fun and exciting races coming up. I'm happy with this performance but I am not satisfied.”
The Oviedo, Fla. native blew out the rest of the field by more than 17 seconds. Lauren Centrowitz (Stanford) came in second with a time of 9:10.99. The time is also a Dempsey Indoor Stadium record.
“I went out by myself from the gun,” Barringer said. “I went out very hard from the start and was trying to get a specific time. It was definitely a solo effort.”
Barringer became the first Buff to run the 3k in under nine minutes. Sara (Gorton) Slattery had held the 3k record for the past six years at 9:07.16. She set that mark at the NCAA Indoor Championship on March 15, 2003. Slattery took third place overall at the championship.
This is the second school record that will have Barringer's name on it. She also owns the 3,000-meter steeplechase record, which also doubles as the American record at 9:22.26.
“I fell like there are some expectations when I walk on the track,” she said. “It's fun to go outside my event area. This is a really good debut effort and it's a good way to open up the season.”
Barringer's time is currently the fastest turned in by a collegiate athlete this indoor season. The previous top mark was 9:01.57 and was run by Tasmin Fanning (Virginia Tech).
Senior Kenyon Neuman earned an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the men's 3k. Neuman clocked a time of 8:02.42 and makes him the seventh best performer at CU in the event. He placed seventh overall.
“That's a good feeling (to rank that high on the CU list),” Neuman said. “I think I can run faster than I did today. I wanted to get the automatic mark and break eight minutes. I think I could have run faster and if I would have gone with the guys ahead of me I think I could have gotten that (automatic) time.”
The automatic time for the men's 3k is 7:54.50.
Jordan Kyle also ran in the 3k for the Buffs. He finished with a time of 8:17.49 and was 22nd in his section. Emily Hanenburg ran in the second section of the women's mile and placed ninth (17th overall). She recorded a mark of 5:01.50.
The rest of the Buffaloes were at the Air Force Academy Duals in Colorado Springs. CU's men dominated the 200-meter dash, taking the top four places. Jeremy Dodson finished in 21.50 and was followed by A.J. Whitaker (21.71), Ryan Campball (21.78) and Quinton Dodson (21.86). Jeremy Dodson and Whitaker also finished 1-2 in the 60-meter dash. Dodson recorded a time of 6.81 and Whitaker finished in 6.94.
Adrian Gomez earned a third-place finish in the 400-meter run. He finished in 49.74 and on the heels of Air Force's Max Lutton (49.67). Stephen Agyei also earned a third-place finish. He clocked a time of 8.51 in the 60-meter hurdles.
CU's 4x440-yard relay team of Quinton Dodson, Matthew McCathran, Whitaker and Gomez took second. They combined for a time of 3:24.25.
Andy Wacker made his 3k indoor debut in style and finished first. He crossed the finish in 8:55.75.
The men also had some top performances in the field events. Jake Timmons took third in the high jump (6-02.75) and Quinton Dodson was third in the long jump with a season best jump of 22-00.25.
Alex Von Hagen placed fourth in the men's heptathlon with 4,520 points. Eddie Taylor took fifth overall with a personal record 4,289 points.
Taylor ran the 1,000-meter run in a pr of 2:47.13 and had to hold off Von Hagen at the finish. Von Hagen placed second in the race (2:47.87).
The CU women were led by Cassie Hirschfeld who recorded a pair of runner-up finishes in the 60 and 200. She finished the 60 in 7.92 and the 200 in 25.82.
Toi Windham was third in the 60-meter hurdles (9.05). She teamed up with Veronica Maul, Joi Windham and Dyamond Seay in the 4x440-yard relay to take second overall in 3:59.98.
Several other Buffs recorded top three finishes at the meet. Emma Coburn placed third in the 800 (2:19.98) and Kaylen Slack was third in the mile run (5:14.26). Rachel Gioscia and Laura Thweatt went 1-2 in the 3k. Gioscia finished well ahead of the field in 10:24.21 and Thweatt finished in 10:40.35.
In the field events, Katie Dreher was the runner-up in the triple jump (36-04.25). Alyssa Frank finished with the third highest jump in the high jump. She reached a height of 5-07.00 which bettered her pr by four inches.
The women's team defeated Wyoming, Colorado State, Air Force and Northern Colorado in head-to-head action, while the Buffalo men outdid UNC but fell CSU, AFA and UW.
Colorado is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque, N.M.
