Morris Claims Top Honors In Three Events

January 29, 2011 | Track and Field

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - University of Colorado sophomore Joe Morris won three events at the U.S. Air Force Academy's Don Barrett Duals on Saturday afternoon.

Morris won two individual titles in the 60 and 200-meter dashes and was part of the winning men's 4x440-yard relay team. He clocked a time of 6.70 seconds in the 60 and followed that performance up with a 21.53 time in the 200.

It was just one week ago that Morris set the CU record in the 60 (6.63) and this week he ran the fifth fastest time ever in the event by a Buff. His time in the 200 tied him for the ninth best CU performer all-time.

The men's 4x440-yard relay, which consisted of Kyle MacIntosh, Matthew McCathran, Morris and Blake Reimer, finished the race in 3:18.21. It was a race to the finish as they just eclipsed the AFA's top team by .04 seconds. The Falcons crossed the finish in 3:18.25.

The women's 4x440-yard relay also took first at the meet. Joi Windham, Katie Dreher, Lindsey Hubbard and Brooke Regan teamed up to run a time of 3:54.78, finishing ahead of Wyoming's team (3:56.20). They were the only two teams to finish in less than four minutes.

Jake Timmons was the only other Buff who came away from the meet with a first-place finish. He reached a personal record height of 6 feet, 8.75 inches in the high jump.

A few of CU's top distance runners were in Seattle on Saturday competing at the UW Invitational at Dempsey Indoor Track. Emma Coburn started off the competition for the Buffs by placing fifth in a star-studded section of the mile and recorded a time of 4:43.58. She was the second collegiate racer to finish as the top three finishers were professionals. Oregon's Zoe Buckman was the top collegian, finishing in 4:37.84 for fourth place.

Elizabeth Tremblay raced in the 800-meter run and took seventh overall with the second fastest time in school history at 2:09.51. The time is the fastest since 1997. Only Mary Decker's time of 2:05.29 is faster. That time was recorded on Feb. 19, 1978 in Lincoln, Neb. Tremblay bettered her PR in the event by over four seconds (2:13.96).

Christian Thompson raced to an eighth-place finish in the men's 3,000-meter run with a personal record of 8:09.29. His time was the fifth best by a college athlete at the meet.

Shalaya Kipp raced to a 12th-place finish in the top section of the women's 3k. Kipp also finished with a personal best time of 9:44.42 and was the ninth-fastest collegiate runner in the race.

The Buffs will compete next at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational (Lincoln, Neb.) or the New Mexico Classic (Albuquerque, N.M.) Friday and Saturday, Feb. 4-5.
