Scott Runs Fastest Qualifier in 400 Hurdle Prelims

BOULDER – The stellar track season continues to the outdoor season for the University of Colorado senior Gabby Scott after she ran the fastest time in prelims in the women's 400 hurdles at the 2019 Texas Relays Thursday afternoon.

Scott, who became the first women's sprint All-American in more than 20 years during the indoor season, opened her final collegiate outdoor season on top of the prelims at the 2019 Texas Relays. She topped the field of 84 athletes by more than four-tenths of a second as she ran 58.37 to qualify first for the finals tomorrow afternoon. Her time is just a tenth of a second from her personal best which is good for second in school history. Her time also puts her sixth on the national lists before this weekend.

Scott was not alone as teammates Eriana Henderson and Dani Johnson joined the hurdle field. Henderson just picked out on the nine-laned final after placing 11th with a time of 1:00.08. Johnson finished 20th overall with a time of 1:01.43. All three women will join Valerie Welch Saturday as they go after the women's 4x400 school record in the women's invitational section of the meet.

The meet began with Maja Wichhart-Donzo and Michaela Wenning concluding the second day of competition in the women's heptathlon. Wichhart-Donzo finished the event seventh, highlighted by a fourth-place finish in the women's 800 after she ran 2:18.02. She picked up more than 900 points in both the 100 hurdles (14.48) and the 200 (24.59). Wenning finished 12th overall and posted a huge mark in the hurdles after running 14.39 seconds to score more than 900 points.

Also for the CU women, Elisa Grandemange placed 19th in the women's hammer throw will a toss of 56.22 meters (184-05).

A pair of men took to the track in Texas as well in the men's 400 hurdle prelims. Nathan Hoy led the Buffs with a 53rd-place finish with a time of 55.65, while Aaron McCoy ran 57.82 seconds to finish 73rd.

Caleb Penner and Henry Carlson stayed in-state and threw at the CSU-Pueblo Spank Blasing meet today. The duo placed eighth and 14th in the men's discus with Carlson edging Penner with a toss of 44.66m, while Penner threw 35.76m. Penner also placed fifth in the hammer throw with a toss of 51.45m.

Action picks up tomorrow with Colorado scheduled to compete in 23 events in three meets. The distance squad will split between the Stanford Invitational and the Mike Fanelli Track Classic at San Francisco State University, with events scheduled from 2:24 p.m. (MT) to 11:57 p.m. (MT). The Texas Relays will kick off the morning with the women's shot put and high jump at 9 a.m. (MT) and also feature the 100 hurdles, 100-meter dash and men's 4x400 meter relay prelims in the morning section. Scott will run finals in the 400 hurdles at 4:35 p.m. (MT).
