Buffaloes Set Huge Marks At Bryan Clay
April 18, 2019 | Track and Field
AZUSA, Calif. – The University of Colorado track and field program concluded action at the Bryan Clay Invitational with numerous top-10 marks in the nation Friday in Azusa, Calif.
Â
The women's heptathlon and men's 5,000 highlighted the meet, led by two top-10 heptathlon marks in CU history and a rundown for the nation's fastest time with Joe Klecker in the 5,000-meter run.
Â
Klecker ran his only race of the weekend and found himself in a dog fight of a 5,000. The race had eight NCAA athletes, seven of which from division 1, that ran faster than the previous national-leading mark of 13:44.43. Klecker placed third among NCAA athletes in a time of 13:35.95. The NCAA winner, Gilbert Kigen of Alabama, ran 13:34.95, while Cole Rockhold of CSU ran 13:35.26. The winner of the race was Isaac Kimeli of the Olympic Running Team in a time of 13:33.47.
Â
The other pair of huge marks came from Michaela Wenning and Maja Wichhart-Donzo in the heptathlon. Wenning posted a 250 point personal best in the heptathlon with a score of 5,595 after posting four lifetime bests and had two other marks within five centimeters of her best-ever marks. Her mark leaps her into third in school history. Wichhart-Donzo improved her best by 137 points after five personal bests and a pair of marks within two centimeters of her best. Her mark of 5,570 jumps her to fourth in school history.
Â
Wenning had an outstanding two days, highlighted by an unprecedented 46 centimeter (1-foot, 4-inches) improvement in the long jump. She jumped 5.86m (19-2.75) to place fourth in her section. She closed out the meet in the 800 with a three second personal best of 2:16.27. She also dropped a tenth of a second in the 100 hurdles (14.16), dropped six-tenths of a second in the 200 (25.52) and was two-centimeters off her high jump personal best and five centimeters from her shot put best.
Â
Wenning's long jump would've been good for seventh in school history but had .03 meters per second too much wind.
Â
Wichhart-Donzo saw personal bests in the 100 hurdles (14.01), 200 (24.41), long jump (5.76m | 18-10.75), javelin (32.61m | 107-0) and the 800 in which she won her heat at 2:14.16. Both women would've ranked sixth and seventh in the nation before this weekend with their marks.
Â
Drianna Mustin also had a huge two days in the heptathlon, finishing with a personal best 4,901 points. She was just 82 points from the 10th best mark in school history after she posted personal best marks in the hurdles by three-tenths of a second, high jump by a centimeter, shot put by 36 centimeters and long jump by 11 centimeters.
Freshman Josh Farmer also competed in his first decathlon, finishing 11th in his section with a total of 5,979 points. He competed well but fouled on his three attempts in the long jump so missed out on points in the event.
Â
The night before, Paxton Smith and Alec Hornecker ran in the men's 10,000. Smith finished fifth in the event with a time of 30:02.88, while Hornecker was 12th in 30:14.60. Lindsey Koch also ran for the women, finishing 19th with a time of 37:12.88.
Â
Also tonight in the 5,000, Gus Newcomb ran 14:56.34 for 20th in his heat. Kaleigh Kroeker finished 17th in the fifth section in a time of 17:22.21. Baylee Jones and Cayla Seligman ran in the third heat together, finishing 18th and 30th, respectfully.
Â
Action picks up tomorrow with the sprinters and hurdlers competing at the Mt. Sac Relays while the rest of the squad competes in the Cardinal Classic at Stanford University.
