Scott Breaks School Record in Final Day of Competition
April 20, 2019 | Track and Field
CALIFORNIA – The University of Colorado track and field program completed its California trip on a high note as senior Gabby Scott rewrote the women's 400-meter hurdle school record at the Mt. Sac Relays.
Â
Scott finished second in the Mt. Sac Relays Invite section of the women's 400 hurdles in a time of 57.59 after winning the first section of the timed finals. Scott dropped seven-tenths of a second off her previous best to pass Leona Russell's 1996 school record of 57.77. It was Russell's indoor 400 record that Scott broke earlier this year.
Â
Eriana Henderson was also in the invite section, finishing eighth overall in a time of 59.59 seconds. She dropped two tenths of a second off her season best and was just three tenths of a second from her personal best.
Â
Both CU women joined forces with Valerie Welch and Dani Johnson in the women's 4x400 invitational section to finish fifth overall with a time of 3:36.20. The women won the first section of the timed final and were able to beat Georgia, Arizona and Iowa from the fast heat. Their time is the second-fastest time ever run in school history, indoor or outdoors. It beats their best mark from their school record performance indoors this season by five-hundredths of a second and is second on the outdoor list.
Â
To the North at the Cardinal Classic, Val Constien opened the season in the steeplechase for the Buffaloes. She finished third in the race with a time of 10:02.34. Her time would've ranked fifth in the nation before this weekend and should be good enough to qualify her for the NCAA Regionals.
Â
Brock Knechtel led a group of men in the discus with a season best toss of 45.34m (148-9). He placed third while freshman Tyler Sconce placed fourth with a toss of 45.19m (148-3). Caleb Penner threw 44.31m (145-4) to nearly tie his season best, while Henry Carlson had a toss of 41.66m (136-8).
Â
The Buffs had a pair of first place finishes at the Cardinal Classic in the jumps on Saturday. Jeremy Cody took the title in the high jump with a jump of 2.02m (6-7.5), while Gunner Rigsby won the triple jump with a mark of 13.77m (45-2.25).
Â
Also for Colorado in the field events, Mariah Walker placed second in the shot put with a season best toss of 14.94m (49-0.25). It was a 30-centimeter improvement on her season best this season.
Â
CU finished out the meet in the women's 1,500 with four competitors. Makena Morley led the charge with a fourth-place finish in the invite section with a time of 4:19.68, a two second personal best. Tabor Scholl had an enormous improvement of five seconds with a time of 4:22.90 in the second section with a third-place finish. Karina Mann was fifth in the same section with a second lifetime best of 4:23.10. Freshman Olivia Brooks won her heat with a time of 4:32.06.
Â
The Buffaloes return to action next weekend with competitors at the Jack Christianson Invitational at CSU as well as the Oregon State High Performance meet.
