Lightning Delays Pac-12 Championships
May 11, 2019 | Track and Field
TUCSON – It was an electric start to the 2019 Pac-12 Championships for the University of Colorado track and field program until a thunderstorm delayed action in Tucson during the men's 100-meter dash.
Numerous Buffaloes qualified through to finals in the 1,500-meter runs and the 400-meter dash, including sophomore Jon Maas. The sprinter threw down a 46.14 second quarter-mile to win the first heat and qualify with the second-fastest time. His mark is nearly a second off his personal best and moves him into sixth in school history in the event.
Another huge personal best came in the women's 1,500 when freshman Annie Hill dropped five seconds off her best with a 4:21.85. She ran the eighth-fastest time in the heat and qualified for the finals in the ninth position. The top time of the day came from Washington's Katie Rainsberger at 4:19.92. Right now Hill's time would qualify as the last position to the NCAA West Preliminaries.
In the men's 1,500 both Eduardo Herrera and Gabe Fendel qualified through to finals. Herrera is in the seventh position after running 3:46.39 and Fendel is in the 11th position after running 3:46.82.
The other qualifying mark before the delay came from the women's 4x100-meter relay team of Eriana Henderson, Valerie Welch, Dani Johnson and Maja Wichhart-Donzo. The quartet finished sixth in a time of 45.40, just eight-hundredths of a second from the season best.
CU also had four women in the 100 hurdle prelims before the delay. Henderson placed 11th with a time of 13.77, Johnson was 15th at 13.96, Welch was 18th at 14.21 and Michaela Wenning finished 19th at 14.34.
Kendal Smith and Duane McClurkin Jr. competed in the men's 400 as well with Smith finishing 15th in 48.45 seconds and a recovering McClurkin Jr. finishing 17th at 48.71.
Two men's throwing events also completed today, the hammer throw and the javelin. Caleb Penner led the Buffaloes in the hammer with a toss of 49.27 meters (161-7) for 15th. Brock Knechtel was in 16th with a toss of 47.61m (156-2) and Tyler Sconce finished in 17th at 47.34m (155-3). Henry Carlson was the lone Colorado athlete in the javelin and finished 13th with a toss of 50.92m (167-0).
The delay came in the middle of the men's 100-meter dash prelims. The current plan at the track is to begin warmups at 9:30 p.m. (MT) and finish the heats of the 100 at 10:00 p.m. The original schedule has the women's 100-meter dash prelims beginning at 8:10 p.m. (MT), but should begin about two hours behind at 10:10 p.m. without further delay. If the schedule remains the final event of the day will be the women's 10,000 which would begin at 1:15 a.m. (MT) if the meet stays to the schedule with the delay.
