Colorado Set for Pac-12 Championships
May 09, 2019 | Track and Field
BOULDER – Colorado closes out the regular season with the 2019 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships this Saturday and Sunday at the University of Arizona.
Â
Action begins at noon (MT) with the men's hammer throw on Saturday, while running events being at 6 p.m. (MT) with the 4x100-meter relays prelims. Sunday's events begin at noon with the women's hammer and running events at 7 p.m. (MT) with the 4x100-meter relay finals.
Â
Colorado begins the championships with the women in first after picking up 13 points from Maja Wichhart-Donzo and Michaela Wenning in the heptathlon. The men are in third after Josh Farmer placed third in the decathlon and Wyatt Rhoads placed eighth.
Â
There will be a number of individuals to watch, including the women's steeplechase where Val Constien is Colorado's lone Pac-12 leader going into the meet. She has a three second lead going into the final against Washington's Emily Hamlin. The Colorado women have won the Pac-12 Championships steeplechase title every season since joining the league. The team has also won 10-straight conference titles dating back to Jenny (Barringer) Simpson's 2009 Big-12 Title.
Â
Other strong contentions for a conference title will come in the women's 5,000 and 10,000. Oregon's Jessica Hull has the top-time of 15:34.93 coming into the race but will have to deal with eight CU women including Dani Jones. Makena Morley and Kaitlyn Benner are ranked in the top-10 this season in the Pac-12 in the event, but will also have Constien, Tabor Scholl, Baylee Jones, Annie Hill and Holly Bent all in the race looking to score big points for the Buffs.
Â
In the 10,000, no CU women entered in the meet have run the long event yet this season. School record holder Morley is entered in the race and her personal best is eight seconds from the Pac-12 leader's time this season. Benner, Bent and Scholl will all double up the 5,000 and 10,000 for Colorado.
Â
On the men's side, both distance events will be the strong focus with seven men entered in the 5,000 and five in the 10,000. Five Buffalo men will double up, John Dressel, Ryan Forsyth, Ethan Gonzales, Paxton Smith and Alec Hornecker. Forsyth is the seventh-ranked man in the 5,000 while Dressel is 10th.
Â
Another title chase opportunity for the CU women will come in the 400 hurdles where school record holder Gabby Scott has the third-fastest time entered. Her mark of 57.59 from the Mt. SAC Relays is less than two-tenths of a second from Arizona's Karolina Pahlitzsch, while USC's Anna Cockrell has the top time of 56.44. Scott will be joined by Eriana Henderson who is ranked 10th in the conference in the event. Valerie Welch and Dani Johnson will also run the event, as both will join Henderson and Wenning in the 100 hurdles.
Â
Other key individuals to watch include Wichhart-Donzo in her season opener in the triple jump. She will join Cheyenne Cheshier in the event and Wenning will join both in the long jump. Mariah Walker is slated to throw the discus and shot while Elisa Grandemange will toss the hammer and javelin. Wenning and Kylee Harr are also entered in the high jump.
Â
For the men, Aaron McCoy is the seventh-ranked individual in the 400 hurdles and will be joined by Kellen Monestime and Nathan Hoy. Duane McClurkin Jr. has been out with a hamstring problem but will run the open 400 this weekend where he is ranked second in the event. Gunner Rigsby is enter in both horizontal jumps with Josh Farmer joining in the long jump. Freshman Jeremy Cody is entered in the high jump while CU will throw four men in the discus and three in the hammer. Henry Carlson will also throw the javelin.
Â
Colorado's highest placing at the Pac-12 Championships is third for the women in 2017 and fourth for the men the same year. The events will be televised on the Pac-12 Network. Coverage begins at 8:30 p.m. (MT) on Saturday and 7 p.m. (MT) on Sunday on all Pac-12 Network channels, apps and online.
