COLORADO TRACK AND FIELD FOURTH AT PEPSI INVITE

April 10, 2004 | Track and Field

EUGENE, Ore. ? The University of Colorado track & field team took to the track for their first quadrangular meet of the year, facing Oregon, Minnesota and Washington at the University of Oregon's Pepsi Team Invitational here at Hayward Field on Saturday afternoon.

Colorado took fourth in both the men's and women's team competitions.  The Oregon women capitalized on seven event wins to tally 184 1/2 points and edge Washington (169), Minnesota (third, 160 1/2) and Colorado (100). The Duck men posted eight individual titles to rack up 191 points and outdistance Minnesota (second, 169), Washington (third, 144) and Colorado (fourth, 101).

Colorado sophomore Dathan Ritzenhein ran solo in arguably the meet's top performance with a 24-second meet record in the 3,000 (7:50.39) and the fastest clocking by an American collegian in 2004 (and sixth overall on the U.S. for collegians or post-collegians including indoors and outdoors).

“Dathan's 3,000 meters was at the end of the meet and it had to have been 80 or 84 degrees,” said head coach Mark Wetmore. “It was a little breezy. He went out right away, and he was hoping to run 63s and to get through the first mile in 4:12 but he came through at 4:09 and was completely alone. To run that time in this conditions means he's very, very fit. I'm sure that's our outdoor 3,000 meter record, and a great rust-buster for him.  Too many good things to mention, but a nice start to the serious part of our season.”

CU's other title went to Renee Metivier in the women's 1,500 meter run.  Her time of 4:26.28 was just over a second ahead of the runner up in the event, Lindsey Egerdahl of Washington (4:27.96).

"The strength of our team is in the middle and long distances with Renee winning the 1500, a nice qualifying time,” said Wetmore.  “Bret getting a close second in the 1500 with about a three and a half second PR and a regional qualifying time.  Natalie Florence had a good three, nearly a PR on a hot windy day.”

The Buffaloes picked up a few second place finishes on the evening as well.  Bret Schoolmeester was second in the men's 1,500 in 3:45.27, while Natalie Florence was second in the 3,000 meter run in a time of 9:38.27. A pair of jumpers scored second place finishes, as Anna Magle was second in the women's high jump with her leap of 5-7, a season best for the junior, and Liza Negriff jumped 39-07.25 in the women's triple, the third-best leap in school history.  Andy Passen was second in the men's shot put in 15.60m, (51-02.25).

“Some pretty good things out here today," said Wetmore. "On an overall basis, I think that our dual meet team is getting better. Year by year we're getting competitive in events we haven't been in the past. Sam Napp, a nice big PR for him. Liza Negriff's second place in the triple was great, as well as tying a PR for Anna Magle in the high jump. I think we were here a year ago, and we outscored our team a year ago by 15-20 points.”

Next weekend the Buffaloes will travel to Walnut, Calif., for the Mt. San Antonio College Relays.
