Coburn Earns Regional Mark in Steeplechase
March 21, 2009 | Track and Field
BOULDER ? University of Colorado freshman Emma Coburn recorded a regional qualifying time of 10 minutes, 50.34 seconds in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to lead the Buffs at the Potts Outdoor Invitational on Saturday.
Coburn took first overall in the race and defeated the runner-up, Wyoming's Emily Higgins, by over 28 seconds. Coburn is not a newcomer to the steeplechase as she raced the 2,000-meter steeplechase in high school and had a PR of 6:47.
“That was the only regional mark of the day and was very good,” head coach Mark Wetmore said. “She looked good technically and will get better throughout the season.”
The Buffs had a great day as several recorded first-place finishes. Dan Edwards won the men's steeplechase with a time of 9:52.98 and Steve Kasica was the first to cross the finish in the 800-meter run (1:54.99) in the men's track events.
CU took the top three places in the men's javelin throw. Brandin Williams took first with a throw of 196 feet and 3 inches (59.82 meters) in his final toss of the morning. Kevin Waldron earned a second place finish with a toss of 170-11, which he scored with his first throw. Mac Crawford was third as he recorded a toss of 167-08.
Parker Fales also earned top honors in the long jump. His best leap was 21-01.50. James Nixon took first in the pole vault. He reached a height of 14-00.00 in the victory.
On the women's side, Laura Thweatt earned an individual crown in the 1,500-meter run. She ran a time of 4:41.67 to improve her PR by over six seconds. Joi Windham took first in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 63.06. The women's 4x100-meter relay also came away with a top finish. Cassie Hirschfeld, Krista Kiper, Veronica Maul and Dyamond Seay combined for a time of 46.77 to edge out Northern Colorado, which finished in 47.34 seconds.
“Honestly we did quite a bit better today than I expected,” Wetmore said. “We had a good day weather wise. There were a lot of good things. Brandin Williams just missed regionals this morning. There were a lot of good things all day long.”
Some of the Buffs will be in action on Saturday, March 28 at the Rob Upton Invitational in Fort Collins, while some members of the distance squad will compete at the Stanford Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 27-28.
