Morris Sets CU 60-Meter Record
January 23, 2011 | Track and Field
"It's been a long time coming," assistant coach Drew Morano said. "Last year around this time we were looking forward to him putting on a uniform and running for us. He ran very well throughout the off season and trained hard. He deserves it. I can see him breaking the school record almost every time he runs."
Morris broke the tape in a blazing time of 6.63 seconds, surpassing the former record of 6.67 that stood since 1999. (Jonathan Prather set the previous record on Feb. 13, at the Air Force Academy.) His time was .05 seconds faster than former CU standout Jeremy Dodson who finished in 6.68 for second place.
"I always say that running against Jeremy [Dodson] makes me better," Morris said. "That is why I am here. I'm here to run with him and get good coaching, but Jeremy helps me improve."
Morris clocked a time of 6.73 in the preliminaries to advance to the finals after winning his heat.
"The race set up nicely that he [Morris] had someone to chase a little bit [Dodson]," head coach Mark Wetmore said. "He ran a really nice time and we are excited about what is to come in the remaining 90% of the season."
The Golden, Colo. native transferred to CU last January from Tennessee but did not compete. His time of 6.63 is currently the third fastest time in the NCAA Division I this season. Morris' performance shows that he will be a very valuable member of the Buffs for years to come.
"It felt good to be in a CU uniform since I had that redshirt season and that was basically a season for me to prepare and get better," Morris explained. "The 60 is my fun race. I enjoyed it."
The top four finishers in the 60 were all tied to CU as A.J. Whitaker and Quinton Dodson placed third and fourth, respectively. Whitaker ran 6.72 and Dodson clocked 6.91 in the finals. Whitaker's time was the fifth best in school history and tied him for third on the all-time CU performers list.
Senior Adam Salzmann didn't let Morris have all the fun as he set a Balch Fieldhouse record in the men's heptathlon with 5,103 points, breaking teammate Alex Von Hagen's previous record of 4,995 points. Salzmann's total is the third best in CU history. The mark is also the top score in the Big 12 this season and ranks 15th in the NCAA.
"Adam is fantastic to work with," assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. "He is definitely one of the leaders on the team and has been pretty much since day one. I think he has a good chance of getting to the NCAA Indoor Championship this year which he has worked hard for the last four years."
Salzmann recorded a pair of runner-up finishes in the 60-meter hurdles (8.58) and the pole vault (14-07.25). He had moved into the top spot in the heptathlon after the 60 hurdles and knew going into the 1,000-meter run (the final event of the heptathlon) that the event was his to win as he is the school record holder in the heptathlon 1,000-meter run. Salzmann placed first with a time of 2:46.67.
"I had some good PR's and things are starting to click," Salzmann said. "That is kind of how multis are; you get little improvements here and there and it all adds up. I am really happy. There are still points out there, there always are, but I am really happy with my performance today."
Wetmore was also pleased with Salzmann's performance.
"Adam has been training well," he said. "He was in here all winter break training hard, as were many of his event area teammates, and it paid off for him. He had an excellent performance."
Von Hagen also had a good outing in the heptathlon, scoring one more point than last year at this meet with 4,996 points. He was seventh in the 60 hurdles (9.05), third in the pole vault (13-07.25) and placed second in the 1,000 (2:47.17). The total is second in the Big 12.
On the women's side, Elizabeth Tremblay shined in the 600-yard run, finishing first with a time of 1:24.07. Not only did she win the race, but she did so with the second-best time in school history. Tremblay beat out her teammate, Brooke Regan, at the line as Regan claimed second with a time of 1:25.13. Regan became the sixth fastest performer in CU history.
"I think she won this meet a year ago but got disqualified for a lane violation and ran 1:26.8," Wetmore said. "She has really made a different effort in her training this year. She was the state champion in the 400 and we are trying to move her up to the 800. It took her awhile to wrap her mind around it, but her training has been excellent and this is a huge step for her."
The next meets for the Buffs are the UW Invitation (Seattle, Wash.) and Don Barrett Duals (USAFA, Colo.) on Saturday, Jan. 29.
