Williams and Hanenburg Qualify For Regionals

BOULDER ? Brandin Williams and Emily Hanenburg led the Buffs at the Colorado Invitational on Saturday with a pair of regional marks in their respective events.
Williams started off the day with a regional mark in the javelin throw. He recorded the throw of 202 feet, 3 inches with his first toss of the day. It was his top throw of the day and is the eighth best throw in CU history. Williams was just over eight feet off his personal record of 210-04.
“Last year it took me until Big 12s to get my mark,” Williams said. “I still have to throw far the rest of the season so it doesn't matter if I got the mark now or at Big 12s. It is a good thing to have though.”
Teammate Kevin Waldron recorded his third straight runner-up finish this season with a throw of 175-09. All three times he has finished behind Williams. This was the best throw of the season for Waldron.
Hanenburg also recorded a regional qualifying time in her 3,000-meter steeplechase debut. Hanenburg finished fourth overall with a time of 11 minutes, 6.28 seconds. This is the first time in her career that Hanenburg has earned a regional mark.
“Today was definitely just going out and trying the steeple for the first time,” Hanenburg said. “Getting the regional mark was a really nice surprise; it was not the main goal of the race. The main goal was to see what it was like to steeple for the first time.”
One other Buff, Emma Coburn, has qualified for regionals in the steeplechase this season. Teammates Jenny Barringer and Allison Sawyer both qualified last year and have yet to run the event this season but should also obtain those marks later in the outdoor campaign.
“It is a huge blessing for me to run and train with Emma,” Hanenburg said. “She has experience from high school and being in practice with her definitely pushes me. And having someone on the team like Jenny is great; just seeing what she has done while she is here and Allison had a regional mark last year. So I think that all of us can work together and really push each other.”
Coburn took the top honors in the women's 800-meter run. She finished the race in 2:14.43, more than three seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Judith Chavez of Metro State. This was Coburn's second first-place finish of the season at home as she won the steeplechase at the Potts Invite in March.
Jake Timmons was the runner-up in the men's high jump. He earned a PR after clearing a height of 6-04.75 on his first attempt. Timmons tied with UC-Colorado Springs' Steven Gomez. James Nixon also placed second in the pole vault. He reached a mark of 14-05.25 on his first try after passing the first six heights.
The CU women's 4x100-meter relay team took top honors with a time of 47.22 seconds. Cassie Hirschfeld, Dyamond Seay, Veronica Maul and Joi Windham teamed up to beat Northern Colorado's relay at the finish by .37 seconds. Windham also took first in the 400-meters hurdles, clocking a PR of 1:02.31. Her sister Toi was the runner-up; finishing in a season-best time of 1:02.38. Hirschfeld also recorded an individual runner-up finish in the 200-meter dash. She finished in 24.98.
The men's 4x400-meter relay came away with a victory, finishing their race in 3:15.20. The relay was made up of Adrian Gomez, A.J. Whitaker, Matthew McCathran and Quinton Dodson. They finished 2.16 seconds in front of Northern Colorado's relay which came in second (3:17.36). Gomez won the men's individual 800 crown, finishing in 53.47.
Several of CU's assistant coaches got into the action at the meet. Combined events/jumps coach Lindsey Malone took first in the high jump, reaching a height of 5-08.75. Volunteer assistant coach Emily Pearson was third with a height of 5-05.00. Pearson was also first in the 200-meter dash (24.97) and second in the javelin (133-09).
Casey Malone, CU's throws coach, was first in the discus throw. He notched a throw of 205-01 on his final toss of the night, which qualified him for the USATF Championships in June. Drew Morano, a volunteer with the sprints program, placed second in the men's 400-meter dash. He finished in 47.59.
The Buffs will compete next at Mt. Sac Relays April 15-18, in Walnut, Calif., and some of the team will head to Waco, Texas to compete at the Michael Johnson Invite on April 18.
