Buffs Pick Up NCAA Provisional Times

Buffs Pick Up NCAA Provisional Times

February 13, 2010 | Track and Field

BOULDER ? The University of Colorado track and field team had a very eventful Saturday with the team competing at three different meets across the country, the Husky Classic, Air Force Invitational and ISU Classic; and all three meets had great performances by the Buffs.

Some of the nation's top distance runners came to compete at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., and that included the Buffaloes. The action at the meet started on Friday night with the Buffs picking up three NCAA provisional times in the 5,000-meter run.

Laura Thweatt finished 17th overall with a time of 16 minutes, 34.33 seconds. She was the runner-up in the second heat, finishing just .49 seconds behind Rose Wetzel (Club Northwest). Thweatt's time was a 25.06 second improvement on her previous personal best of 16:59.39.

Richard Medina and Aldo Vega also earned provisional times in the men's race, finishing just .12 seconds apart in the third heat. Medina placed eighth in the heat with a PR of 14:04.24, while Vega took ninth (14:04.36). Overall Medina placed 20th and Vega was 21st.

On Saturday, Steve Kasica added another provisional time for the Buffs, this time in the 800-meter run. He finished second overall after clocking a PR of 1:50.50. The time is the sixth best in CU history and is the fastest since 2005. Kasica becomes the fourth best performer in the event at CU with that mark.

Emma Coburn ran the mile in the top invitational section of the meet and finished with a personal best time of 4:48.59 (17th overall) in a very strong field. She finished second in her heat behind Washington State's Lisa Egami (4:47.48).

The women's 3,000-meter run was also very competitive. Katie Cumming crossed the finish in 9:37.60. She was 23rd overall, but was eighth in the second heat.

CU performed well in the men's weight throw as Trey Mullen recorded the best throw in the weight throw by a Buff this season after launching a toss of 59 feet, 9.75 inches in his third attempt for 12th place. The mark is also a personal best for Mullen. Patrick Bachmann also had a nice throw as he finished 15th overall with a mark of 50-08.75.

Closer to home at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo., Brianne Beemer clocked the fastest 400-meter dash time by a Buff in over eight years at the Air Force Invitational. Beemer, who qualified for the finals in the 400 on Friday night, recorded a PR of 56.92 while placing fourth overall.

“Brianne had a fantastic weekend,” assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. “She ran well planned races and finished her 400-meter final with a very solid personal record."

The performance is also significant for Beemer as she competes in the combined events, which does not include the 400 in the five events of the indoor pentathlon. She does run the 400-meter hurdles during the outdoor season.

“Brianne's training is on the right path to set an NCAA qualifying mark in the indoor pentathlon as well as a stellar start for her outdoor training in the heptathlon and 400-meter hurdles. She is a true competitor that I can always trust to get the job done. I am impressed with her work ethic, attitude and determination on a daily basis.”

Brooke Regan and Precious Lyons were back in action for the Buffs in the 800 after earning spots in the finals on Friday night. Regan ran to a sixth-place finish (2:22.14) and Lyons was 12th overall (2:28.18).

The men had three qualifiers in the finals on the track. Travis Putnam earned his way into the final of the 800 on Friday night and finished seventh overall with a time of 1:59.50. In the 60-meter hurdles, Javen Correia ran a ninth-place finish (8.55) and finished seventh overall in the finals. He equaled his PR of 8.51 in the finals, tying his mark from two weeks ago at the Don Barrett Duals. Adam Salzmann also advanced to the finals in the 60 hurdles. He was 12th in the prelims (8.63) and raced to a ninth-place finish with a time of 8.61,

CU also came away with some strong performances in the longer events. Aaron Friedland placed seventh in the 3k (9:17.63) and Jerome Perkins was ninth (9:24.13). Megan Burrell was third in the women's mile after clocking a time of 5:19.22. Allison Sawyer was fifth overall (5:28.85) and Staci Foster finished ninth (5:38.15).

Jason DeWitt led the Buffs in the field events after recording a fifth-place finish in the high jump. He cleared a height of 6-06.75 to tie a season-best. Jake Timmons tied for seventh in the high jump with a height of 6-04.75. Alyssa Frank was the top female finisher in the high jump for CU; recording a mark of 5-05 while tying for sixth. Katie Dreher was seventh in the triple jump after leaping 37-11.50, her best jump of the year.

At the ISU Classic in Ames, Iowa, the Buffs came away with a pair of ninth-place finishes in the 600-yard run. Matthew McCathran clocked a PR of 1:11.97 to place ninth overall. Adrian Gomez was 15th overall with a time of 1:12.81, yet another PR for the Buffs. Joi Windham placed ninth on the women's side to pace the Buffs in the 600. She crossed the finish in 1:27.17. Toi Windham was 14th overall (1:28.86).

A.J. Whitaker just missed qualifying for the semifinals in the 60-meter dash as he was 17th overall with a time of 6.97. The top 16 finishers advanced to the finals.

Colorado will have one more tune-up before the Big 12 Indoor Conference Championships on February 26-27 in Ames, Iowa. Several Buffs will compete on Friday, February 20 at the Colorado School of Mines Twilight meet in Golden, Colo.
