Buffs Impress At CU Invite
April 10, 2010 | Track and Field
BOULDER -It had been almost two years since University of Colorado distance runner Richard Medina raced at Potts Field and he returned in style on Saturday as he edged out teammate Joe Bosshard in the 1,500-meter run.
Medina recorded a personal record of 3 minutes, 53.12 seconds while Bosshard ran 3:53.96 on the second day of the Colorado Invitational. Medina had not raced at Potts Field since the 2008 Big 12 Championships when he finished fourth in the 5,000 and fifth in the 10,000-meter runs. (Medina did not compete during the 2009 outdoor campaign.)
CU took the top five spots in the men's 1,500. Aldo Vega finished third after Medina and Bosshard with a time of 3:55.02 and Andy Wacker placed fourth (3:55.69). Matt Tebo rounded out the top five with a time of 3:56.37.
The women took the top four spots in the 800 later in the afternoon. Emma Coburn led the charge and finished in 2:10.61 to become the seventh fastest performer in CU history. Laura Thweatt was just behind in second (2:11.35) to become the eighth best performer while Elizabeth Tremblay was third. She clocked in a time of 2:11.40 to become the ninth fastest 800 runner at CU. Brooke Regan was fourth overall; finishing in 2:14.30.
The men's 4x100-meter relay team took top honors for the second week in a row after clocking a time of 40.83; improving from their time of 41.21 seconds last Saturday at the Tom Benich Classic in Greeley, Colo. Quinton Dodson ran the first leg and handed off to Jeremy Dodson. A.J. Whitaker was the third leg and Kyle MacIntosh anchored the race for the Buffs. CU once again finished ahead of Northern Colorado's relay, which finished in 41.55.
Cameron Clayton earned a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and improved his personal record by more than 20 seconds in the race. He crossed the finish in 9:42.97, bettering his mark of 10:03.44. Clayton ran the steeplechase last weekend, also at the Tom Benich Classic, and turned in a time of 10:04.38.
Kristin Johansen made her Potts Field debut and won the 3,000 in the process, adding to CU's top finishes in the distance events. She ran a mark of 10:14.82 to defeat her teammate (Jhenya Najreini) who crossed the finish in 10:22.63.
Brianne Beemer broke the tape first in the 400-meter hurdles as the top sprints' athlete of the meet for the Buffaloes. She ran a PR of 1:01.65 in her season debut. Her former best was 1:01.80.
CU assistant coach Casey Malone competed in the discus throw and won the gold after launching a toss of 206-11 with his first throw. Malone's mark is the second best in the country and ranks ninth in the world. Malone is the reigning USATF Discus Champion and placed fifth at the IAAF World Championships in August.
The Buffs picked up quite a few second-place finishes at the invite as well. Shalaya Kipp took silver in the women's 1,500 after clocking a time of 4:41.98. She was .75 seconds off the pace of Adam's State's Sofia Monroe who finished in 4:41.23. Steve Kasica also recorded a second-place finish. He ran a time of 1:51.80 in the 800 and was just .77 behind Mark Husted (CSM) who finished in 1:51.03.
Kyle MacIntosh raced to a time of 53.38 in the 400 hurdles to take second, just .29 seconds from the top spot. Also in the sprints, Quinton Dodson ran a time of 21.68 in the 200, just off Evan Taylor's (UNC) pace of 21.32 in the first heat. In the field, Kaity Kark recorded a second-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 43-09, also marking a PR.
In addition there were several third-place finishes for CU. Sally Page recorded a bronze finish in the javelin in her final attempt of the day. She tossed a season-high mark of 127-8. Kevin Fasing was third in the men's javelin with a throw of 189-11, also a season-best. That throw was his second launch in the event. Fasing redshirted the 2009 season after suffering a season-ending injury in 2008.
Lauria Canini tied for third in the women's high jump when she cleared a height of 5-04.25 and Katie Dreher was third in the triple jump with a leap of 36-11. On the men's side, Jake Timmons recorded a personal best jump of 6-7.
The women's 4x400-meter relay of Joi Windham, Sydney Davis, Tremblay and Beemer also recorded a third-place finish. They finished in 3:53.43.
The Buffs have a pair of meets next weekend. They will have the chance to compete at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays April 15-17 in Walnut, Calif. and the Michael Johnson Invite on April 17 in Waco, Texas.
